CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Hidden in the Fire

The mansion was eerily quiet.

No one dared speak as detectives photographed every corner of the library.

Daniel knelt beside Maya, wrapping his suit jacket around her trembling shoulders while paramedics examined the bruises covering her body.

"I'm here," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry."

Maya looked at him through tear-filled eyes.

"You finally know."

Daniel couldn't answer.

Every day for nearly a year, he'd believed his mother's story—that Maya's memory problems, anxiety, and weakness were side effects of the accident.

Now he realized...

They had never been symptoms.

They had been carefully manufactured.

Hours later...

Detective Rachel Monroe unlocked the hidden drawer inside Vivian's private study.

Inside were dozens of USB drives.

Every one of them was labeled with a date.

Daniel inserted the first drive into a laptop.

The screen flickered.

Security footage appeared.

Vivian was smiling warmly as she handed Maya a bottle labeled Daily Recovery Vitamins.

Seconds later...

She poured the real vitamins into the trash.

Then replaced them with prescription sedatives.

Every.

Single.

Morning.

For eleven months.

Daniel's face went white.

"No..."

Claire covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

Another recording played.

Vivian speaking to someone over the phone.

"The medication keeps her confused. She questions herself before she questions me."

Daniel slammed the laptop shut.

His hands were shaking with rage.

"She poisoned my wife..."

But Detective Monroe wasn't finished.

"There was something else hidden in the safe."

She placed a burned photograph on the table.

Half the image had survived.

Daniel stared at it.

His heartbeat stopped.

The photograph showed Maya's car.

The exact night of the crash.

Standing beside the wreck...

Was Vivian.

The timestamp was nearly twenty minutes before emergency services arrived.

Daniel frowned.

"She told police she wasn't there."

Detective Monroe nodded.

"She lied."

The room became deadly silent.

Because if Vivian had been there before anyone else...

Then the crash might never have been an accident.

That evening...

Vivian was escorted from the mansion in handcuffs.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Did you drug your daughter-in-law?"

"Were you involved in the crash?"

She refused to answer.

But as the police cruiser pulled away...

She smiled.

A slow...

Confident...

Terrifying smile.

Detective Monroe noticed it immediately.

"She's not afraid."

Daniel looked up.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

May you like

Monroe said quietly,

"...she still thinks she's going to win."
