CHAPTER 3 — The Man Behind the Accident

Three days later...

Investigators reopened the crash case.

The original report claimed Maya had lost control after driving through heavy rain.

But modern forensic reconstruction revealed something impossible.

There were no brake marks.

No attempt to avoid impact.

Instead...

Someone had tampered with the brake line.

It had been cleanly cut.

Not damaged.

Cut.

Detective Monroe assembled the task force.

"If Vivian planned this..."

"She didn't do it alone."

Phone records led detectives to an abandoned auto repair shop outside the city.

Its former owner, Victor Hale, had disappeared shortly after Maya's accident.

When officers forced open the rusted garage door...

They found shelves filled with old repair invoices.

One folder carried Maya's license plate number.

Inside was a receipt.

Cash payment.

Brake replacement.

Signed one day before the crash.

The customer name wasn't Maya.

It was Vivian.

Victor was arrested two days later while trying to cross the border.

At first, he denied everything.

Then detectives showed him the receipt.

And the surveillance footage.

His confidence disappeared.

Finally...

He confessed.

Vivian had offered him two hundred thousand dollars.

Not to kill Maya.

Only to make sure the brakes failed "at the right moment."

"If she survives..."

Vivian had said,

"...everything becomes much easier."

Daniel felt sick.

His mother had never intended murder.

She wanted something far crueler.

A woman trapped forever.

Dependent.

Powerless.

Easy to control.

But Victor revealed one more secret.

"There was another person."

Everyone looked up.

"He wore a gray suit."

"He never gave me his name."

May you like

"He called Vivian..."

'Partner.'
