Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL AT TABLE NINE

I wanted to go alone.

That was not bravery.

It was guilt.

Lauren had contacted me because I spoke publicly.

She had given me evidence.

Now Nolan had her.

Every instinct I had said her danger belonged to me.

Miriam called that nonsense.

Alessandra called it exactly what Nolan wanted.

Dante called it nothing at all.

He waited until everyone else stopped talking.

Then he asked, "What do you want to accomplish?"

I looked at him.

"Get Lauren back."

"Good."

"What do you mean good?"

"That is the goal."

He pointed to Nolan's message.

"Going alone is not the goal."

I hated how quickly that cut through the panic.

"He said without you."

"Then I won't be visible."

"Dante."

"You choose whether to go."

"And if I go?"

"You do not go unprotected."

"That's a condition."

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"You said my choices were mine."

"They are."

His voice stayed level.

"My participation is mine too."

I almost smiled despite everything.

"You really enjoy technicalities."

"Miriam is rubbing off on me."

While we waited for the hotel plan to begin, Lauren sat beside me in a service office with a paper cup of water between both hands.

"I hate that I got into his car," she said.

I looked at her.

"You thought he wanted to talk."

"I knew better."

"Knowing someone is dangerous does not make every dangerous choice predictable."

She stared at the water.

"He said he had an old file from Doyle."

"About you?"

"Yes."

"So you went."

"Yes."

Her mouth tightened.

"I spent years telling myself I would never let him manipulate me again."

"Then he used the one thing you still wanted."

"Proof."

I nodded.

"That is not stupidity."

Lauren looked at me.

"You believe that?"

"I am trying to."

"For me or for you?"

"Both."

We sat in silence.

Then she asked, "Do you trust Dante?"

I looked through the narrow window in the office door.

He stood down the hall speaking with Miriam.

"Sometimes."

Lauren blinked.

"That's your answer?"

"Yes."

"Not yes or no?"

"I don't think trust is a door anymore."

"Meaning?"

"I trust him to stop when I say no."

"I trust him to tell me some ugly truths."

"I do not trust that he has told me every ugly truth yet."

"I trust him not to hand me back to Nolan."

"I do not automatically trust every person who works for him."

Lauren considered that.

"That sounds exhausting."

"It is less exhausting than pretending trust has to be total or worthless."

She smiled faintly.

"Therapy would charge you for that sentence."

"Send me an invoice."

The smile disappeared when footsteps passed outside.

Lauren's shoulders tightened.

I noticed because mine did too.

We looked at each other.

Two women reacting to shoes in a hallway.

The absurdity made me furious.

"When this is over," I said, "I want one week where a man's footsteps mean nothing."

Lauren laughed softly.

"Aim higher."

"Two weeks."

"Vacation."

"Somewhere warm."

"No men named Pierce."

"Or Moretti."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You sure about the second one?"

I looked toward the hall again.

Dante had turned and was watching the closed office door, not entering because I had asked for ten minutes alone with Lauren.

"Maybe one exception."

Lauren smiled.

Then she became serious.

"Mia, if this goes wrong, do not trade yourself for me."

I stared.

"What?"

"That is what he expects."

"You matter."

"So do you."

Her voice sharpened.

"Do not turn caring about me into another reason you disappear."

The sentence went straight through me.

Nolan had trained me to prove love by surrendering something.

Time.

Friends.

Privacy.

Safety.

Lauren was asking me to care without erasing myself.

That felt like another new language.

I took her hand.

"We both leave."

She squeezed my fingers.

"That's the deal."

The exchange location was a hotel ballroom during a political fundraising dinner.

Of course it was.

Nolan understood crowds.

He understood appearances.

He understood that no one wanted to admit danger existed beneath chandeliers.

The fundraiser honored Richard Pierce for forty years of civic leadership.

The irony was almost vulgar.

I received a ticket under my own name.

Nolan wanted me seen.

He wanted photographs showing me approaching him voluntarily.

He wanted to rewrite the gala where I escaped him.

This time, he wanted the story to end with me coming back.

I wore a dark green dress Alessandra chose because it had sleeves and a hidden pocket for my phone.

She refused to call it tactical.

"It is tailoring."

Miriam fitted a small recording device inside the seam.

"Legal?" I asked.

"Illinois law allows recording in certain circumstances, but do not assume this solves everything."

"You could have just said yes."

"Then you would stop listening."

Dante stood across the dressing room doorway.

Black suit.

No tie.

He looked like every rumor about him had learned manners.

"You can't be inside," I said.

"I know."

"If Nolan sees you, he may hurt Lauren."

"I know."

"Do not come in because you get angry."

His face tightened.

"I know."

I walked closer.

"Promise me."

That changed something.

Dante looked directly into my eyes.

"If you ask me to stay out, I stay out unless your life is in immediate danger."

"Lauren's too."

"Yes."

"No revenge."

"No revenge."

I nodded.

Then, impulsively, I touched his chest where I had touched him in the first ballroom.

He went still.

I felt the memory pass between us.

"That kiss cost a lot," I whispered.

"Yes."

"I still don't regret it."

Dante's eyes changed.

He lifted one hand.

Then stopped before touching my face.

"May I?"

The question hit me harder than any practiced romance could have.

I nodded.

His fingers brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

Nothing more.

"Come back out," he said.

"That's the plan."

The ballroom was filled with donors, politicians, executives, and people whose names appeared on buildings.

Richard Pierce stood near the stage.

He was sixty-eight and looked like an older, more disciplined version of Nolan.

Silver hair.

Perfect smile.

Cold blue eyes.

When he saw me, the smile widened.

"Mia Calloway."

He took my hand before I could avoid it.

"I am relieved you're safe."

I pulled my hand away.

"From your son or from your lawyers?"

His smile did not move.

"Nolan has always been emotional."

I almost laughed.

"Interesting word."

"He cares too much."

"Another interesting phrase."

Richard lowered his voice.

"You have been pulled into history you do not understand."

"Then explain it."

"Not here."

"That's what men say when they need darkness for the next lie."

For the first time, his eyes cooled.

"You sound like your father."

My pulse jumped.

"Did you know him well?"

"Well enough to know he mistook documentation for power."

The recording device beneath my dress suddenly felt hot against my skin.

"Did you kill him?"

Richard's expression did not change.

"No."

Too fast.

I knew that rhythm too.

He leaned closer.

"Do not ask questions you are not prepared to survive."

There it was.

A threat in a room full of people.

Just like Nolan.

Control wrapped in social language.

"Where is Lauren?"

Richard looked toward the dining tables.

"Ask Nolan."

He walked away.

My phone vibrated.

TABLE NINE.

I moved through the crowd.

Table nine was near a service corridor.

Luca sat alone with a drink.

I stopped.

"Where is Nolan?"

Luca looked up.

"Not here yet."

"Why are you?"

"Because I need to tell you something before Dante ruins this."

My stomach tightened.

"Ruins what?"

"The deal."

"What deal?"

Luca glanced around.

"Richard will release Lauren if you agree not to activate the trust for ten days."

I stared at him.

"The hearing is in six."

"Exactly."

"So he wins."

"He says he only wants time to negotiate."

I laughed.

"You believe him?"

Luca's face hardened.

"He gave me proof about my father."

"Elena gave you a report."

"Richard gave me the lab name."

"Richard Pierce is the man Elena says killed your father."

"She says."

"You brought Nolan into Dante's house."

"Because Nolan wants out."

"Nolan wants whatever keeps him powerful."

Luca leaned forward.

"You think my uncle is different?"

I did not answer.

"He lies too," Luca said.

"He buried your father's murder."

"I know."

"He burned evidence."

"I know."

"He lied to me about my father."

"I know."

Luca's voice rose.

"Then why are you defending him?"

"I'm not."

The answer surprised both of us.

"I am deciding what he is based on what he does now."

Luca looked away.

My phone buzzed.

Nolan.

SERVICE HALL.

I stood.

Luca caught my wrist.

Not hard.

But my entire body reacted.

I ripped my hand free.

He looked horrified.

"Sorry."

"Do not do that again."

"I said sorry."

"And I said don't."

He lowered his hand.

"Mia, wait."

I turned.

"Richard knows Dante is outside."

My blood went cold.

"How?"

Luca did not answer.

I stared at him.

"How?"

His face gave me the truth.

"You told him."

"I told Nolan the security plan."

"Why?"

"Because he promised Lauren would be safe."

I stepped backward.

"You betrayed your uncle."

"I am trying to prevent another war."

"By giving an abuser the location of the man he is afraid of?"

"You don't understand."

"I understand exactly."

Fear makes honest men lie and guilty men look useful.

My father's letter echoed in my head.

Luca had decided Nolan looked useful.

I hurried into the service hall.

Nolan stood near an elevator.

Lauren was beside him.

She was pale.

Her hands were free.

No visible injuries.

Relief nearly dropped me to my knees.

"Lauren."

She started toward me.

Nolan caught her elbow.

I froze.

"Let her go."

"In a minute."

His voice was calm.

"You came alone?"

"Yes."

Technically true.

No one stood beside me.

"Where is Moretti?"

"Not your concern."

Nolan smiled faintly.

"It always becomes my concern."

Lauren looked at me.

Her eyes moved downward once.

A signal.

I followed it.

Nolan's other hand held her phone.

The screen was recording.

Lauren had started her own recording.

Good.

"What do you want?"

"Ten days."

"No."

"Mia."

"No."

His jaw tightened.

"You haven't even heard the terms."

"I know the result."

"You keep the trust."

"After your father controls it."

"Temporarily."

"No."

He stepped closer.

Lauren flinched.

I saw it.

He saw me see it.

"Stop making me the monster."

There it was.

The sentence every abusive man eventually found.

I almost felt calm.

"You did that yourself."

His face changed.

"I protected you for three years."

"From what?"

"My father."

I stared.

"By hurting me first?"

Nolan flinched.

"You do not know what he would have done."

"Then tell me."

"He wanted you married."

"I know."

"He wanted you dependent."

"You helped."

"Because if I did not, he would send someone worse."

I actually laughed.

"That is your defense?"

"I kept him away from your mother."

"He went to my aunt's house."

"After you kissed Moretti."

"So it is still my fault."

Nolan's face twisted.

"That is not what I said."

"It is what you always say."

A noise sounded at the far end of the corridor.

Nolan looked past me.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Too late."

I turned.

Two men in hotel security uniforms were walking toward us.

Something about them was wrong.

Their shoes.

Black tactical boots under hotel trousers.

One reached inside his jacket.

I did not think.

I grabbed Lauren and pulled her behind the corner wall.

Nolan moved too.

A sharp crack echoed down the corridor.

Not a gunshot near us.

A light fixture shattered above the elevator.

Guests screamed inside the ballroom.

The corridor erupted into motion.

Nolan shoved through a service door.

Lauren and I crouched behind a heavy catering cart.

The two false guards ran past.

One spoke into a radio.

"Moretti vehicle, east exit."

My blood went cold.

They were not here for me.

They were using me to pull Dante into position.

"Dante."

I grabbed my phone.

No signal.

Jammer or dead zone, I did not know.

Lauren handed me hers.

No signal either.

I ran toward the ballroom.

"Mia."

Lauren followed.

We pushed through panicked guests.

The front entrance was blocked by security.

I saw Luca near table nine.

"Call Dante."

He stared at me.

"What happened?"

"They know his car."

Luca went pale.

"Who?"

"The men you gave the plan to."

"I only told Nolan."

"Then Nolan told someone."

Luca pulled out his phone.

He looked at the screen.

"No service."

I ran toward the kitchen exit.

A hotel employee tried to stop me.

I ignored him.

Cold air hit my face.

Across the alley, Dante's black sedan sat at the curb.

The driver's door was open.

One of his security men was on the ground, conscious but dazed.

Dante was nowhere in sight.

My heart stopped.

Then a hand grabbed my shoulder from behind.

I spun.

Luca.

"Where is he?"

He looked terrified now.

"I don't know."

His phone buzzed as service returned.

A message appeared.

He read it.

His face went white.

"What?"

He turned the screen toward me.

A photograph showed Dante sitting in the back of a van.

His hands were bound.

Blood marked one corner of his mouth, but he was conscious.

Beneath the photograph was a message addressed to Luca.

YOU WANTED THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER.

BRING MIA AND THE BINDER.

COME ALONE.

I looked at Luca.

May you like

He looked at me.

The betrayal he thought would prevent a war had just delivered Dante directly into one.
