Chapter 15 - NO MORE SAFE HOUSES

Dante had once told me protection was not free.

By the time he was taken, I understood the opposite was also true.

Neither was independence.

Every choice had a price.

The question was whether I was the one choosing to pay it.

Luca wanted to take the binder and go alone.

Alessandra wanted to lock him in a room.

Miriam wanted police involved immediately.

Elena wanted Richard Pierce's name released to three journalists before anyone moved.

Matteo wanted to know where his father was.

I wanted all of them to stop talking long enough for me to think.

We regrouped at Arthur Vale's office because the Moretti house was no longer considered secure.

No one said the words safe house.

I would have left if they did.

The blue binder sat in front of me on Arthur's conference table.

The original was inside a bank vault now.

The copy looked ordinary.

Paper.

Plastic dividers.

A thing people had been hurt over for fifteen years.

"They want Mia and the binder," Luca said.

"Then I go."

Alessandra turned on him.

"You have done enough."

"This is my fault."

"Yes."

Her answer cut him.

She did not soften it.

"That does not make another stupid decision noble."

Luca looked at the table.

I watched him.

He looked younger when he was ashamed.

"Who sent the message?" I asked.

Gabriel looked up from his laptop.

"Untraceable service."

"Voice?"

"No call yet."

"Location?"

"They will probably send one."

Miriam folded her arms.

"We should contact federal law enforcement."

Arthur looked at her.

"Which office?"

"One not connected to Doyle."

"And how do we identify that before Dante is moved again?"

"We do not solve corruption by assuming every badge is compromised."

Alessandra looked at me.

"Miriam has been arguing with my family for twenty-two years."

"That explains why she looks tired."

Miriam gave me a dry look.

"Deeply."

My phone rang.

Nolan.

Everyone stopped.

I answered.

"Where is Dante?"

Nolan sounded breathless.

"I didn't do this."

I closed my eyes.

"You always say that after something happens."

"Mia, listen to me."

"Where is he?"

"My father has him."

Richard.

"How do you know?"

"Because I was supposed to deliver you."

The room went silent.

"At the hotel?"

"Yes."

"You knew those men were coming."

"I knew someone was supposed to watch the east exit."

"You used Lauren as bait."

"I needed you there."

My hand shook.

"You kidnapped a woman to manipulate me into a room."

"I was trying to get you to agree to the delay before my father escalated."

"You do not get credit for the softer version of coercion."

Nolan inhaled sharply.

"I know."

That answer stopped me.

He had never said those words like that.

"Where is Dante?"

"An old Pierce printing facility near Cicero."

Alessandra was already writing the address from my speakerphone.

"How many men?" I asked.

"I don't know."

"Is Richard there?"

"He will be."

"Why are you telling me?"

Silence.

"Nolan."

His voice dropped.

"Because my father told me to bring you there and I finally understood he is going to kill you after the trust transfers."

My blood went cold.

No one in the room moved.

"Why now?"

"Because you opened the warehouse early."

"That message came before the gala."

"He knows the emergency clause can activate."

Nolan swallowed audibly.

"If you are alive, you can challenge him."

"And if I'm dead?"

"He becomes alternate controller."

I looked at Miriam.

Her face confirmed the legal possibility without needing words.

Nolan continued.

"Mia, do not go to the address."

"Dante is there."

"Moretti chose this life."

Anger flashed through me.

"So did you."

The line went quiet.

"You are right," Nolan whispered.

I almost did not recognize him.

"Go to the federal building."

"And leave Dante?"

"Yes."

"No."

His voice sharpened.

"Damn it, Mia."

There he was again.

The apology lasted until I made a choice he disliked.

"Do not raise your voice at me."

Silence.

"I am trying to save you."

"Then tell us everything."

"I did."

"No."

I looked at Luca.

"Who poisoned Salvatore?"

Luca's head snapped up.

Nolan was silent.

"You know."

"Mia—"

"Who?"

Nolan exhaled.

"My father ordered it."

Luca closed his eyes.

Alessandra's face went gray.

"Who carried it out?"

"I don't know."

"Why kill him?"

"Salvatore wanted a larger share of the Vale holdings."

Dante's brother had been part of the original corruption.

Then greed made him disposable.

A familiar story.

Nolan continued.

"Richard made it look natural."

"And Dante believed it."

"For years."

"Why did Elena know?"

"She had one of Lucia's copies."

"And you met her because?"

"I wanted proof against my father."

"To stop him?"

Nolan hesitated.

"To protect myself."

There it was.

Finally, an honest answer.

He had not been trying to save me.

He had been trying to survive Richard.

Sometimes that overlapped with helping me.

Sometimes it overlapped with hurting me.

But I had never been the center of his decisions.

He was.

"Send everything you have to Miriam."

"Why?"

"Because if you actually want out, that is the first door."

"You think she can protect me?"

"I don't care."

My own coldness surprised me.

"I care whether your evidence protects the truth."

The line went silent.

Then Nolan whispered, "I did love you."

My chest tightened.

The old part of me wanted to answer.

The new part did not.

"That stopped mattering when your love required me to be afraid."

I ended the call.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Matteo said quietly, "That was brutal."

Alessandra looked at him.

"Necessary can sound brutal when people are used to being lied to."

Gabriel's laptop chimed.

"Incoming files."

Nolan had sent them.

Dozens.

Emails.

Internal memos.

Calendar entries.

Photographs.

One audio recording.

Miriam leaned over Gabriel's shoulder.

"This could be enough to get a federal warrant tonight."

Hope moved through the room.

Then the lights went out.

Not flickered.

Out.

Emergency lighting turned the glass conference room red.

Arthur stood.

"Generator should have engaged."

Alessandra's hand went inside her coat.

Miriam grabbed my wrist, then immediately released it.

"Sorry."

"Fine."

The building alarm did not sound.

That was worse.

Gabriel closed the laptop.

"Network just died."

A phone rang in the darkness.

Mine.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Richard Pierce's voice came through for the first time.

"Mia."

Every hair on my arms rose.

"Where is Dante?"

"Alive."

"Let me hear him."

A pause.

Then Dante's voice.

"Mia, do not come here."

A sharp sound followed.

Not a gunshot.

A chair scraping.

Richard returned.

"He remains tiresome."

My anger steadied me.

"What do you want?"

"The original binder."

"You know we copied it."

"Copies can be challenged."

"And me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your signature will end this cleanly."

Miriam mouthed one word.

Coercion.

I kept Richard talking.

"What signature?"

"A voluntary transfer of your beneficial interest."

"Voluntary."

"Paper has no memory of tone."

The sentence chilled me.

"And after I sign?"

"You go home."

I almost laughed.

"You sound like your son."

Richard's voice cooled.

"My son mistakes emotion for leverage."

"He learned from you."

"He learned poorly."

"He says you planned to kill me."

A pause.

Not long.

Long enough.

"Nolan says many things when frightened."

"Did you kill my father?"

Silence.

Then Richard answered.

"Michael made a fatal decision."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Miriam's eyes widened.

The recorder on my phone was running.

"What decision?"

"He believed information made him untouchable."

"Did you have him killed?"

Richard exhaled softly.

"I am not confessing to you over a telephone."

"Then why call?"

"Because I know where your mother is."

My body went cold.

"What?"

"Carol's house was never secure."

I looked at Alessandra.

She was already dialing Mom.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Richard continued.

"You have spent a week learning what happens when people around you matter."

I gripped the phone.

"If you touch her—"

"Be at the printing facility in one hour."

"Let me speak to her."

A rustle.

Then Mom's voice, furious rather than afraid.

"Mia, do not come here."

I closed my eyes.

"Mom."

"I am fine."

Richard took the phone back.

"One hour."

The line died.

Alessandra looked at me.

"You are not going."

I laughed softly.

"You sound like your brother."

"Good."

"He is there because Luca gave away the security plan."

Luca flinched.

"And my mother is there because every safe place keeps becoming a map."

I looked around the red-lit conference room.

"No more safe houses."

Miriam stepped forward.

"Mia, listen to me."

"I am listening."

"We have evidence now."

"And he has two people."

"We can involve federal agents."

"Do it."

Everyone stopped.

I looked at her.

"Do it now."

"And you?"

I picked up the copied binder.

"I am going to the printing facility."

Alessandra stepped in front of me.

"Absolutely not."

"You cannot stop me."

"I can try."

I met her eyes.

"Then you become another person deciding my fear makes my choices invalid."

The words hit her.

She stepped back.

I hated using them.

I meant them.

"But I am not going alone," I said.

Miriam looked relieved.

"Good."

"I am going with law enforcement close enough to move when I give the signal."

Gabriel nodded slowly.

"That can work."

"And the binder?" Arthur asked.

I held it up.

"A copy."

"Richard may know."

"Then he can be disappointed."

For the first time that night, Alessandra smiled.

It was not warm.

It was proud.

Forty-seven minutes later, I walked into the abandoned Pierce printing facility with no Dante beside me, no bodyguard holding my arm, and no illusion that anyone could make the choice safe.

Richard waited beneath a row of dead fluorescent lights.

Mom sat in a chair twenty feet away.

Her hands were tied in front of her, but she looked physically unharmed.

Dante was on the opposite side of the room.

His hands were bound behind him.

One eye was swollen.

He looked furious when he saw me.

"Mia."

"I know."

"You should not be here."

"You really need new material."

For one second, despite everything, his mouth almost smiled.

Richard stepped forward.

"The binder."

I held it out.

"My mother first."

"No."

"Then no binder."

His smile disappeared.

"You think this is a negotiation."

"Everything is a negotiation when both people want something."

Dante's eyes met mine.

Something like approval flashed there.

Richard gestured.

A man cut the ties around Mom's wrists.

She stood.

"Walk to me," I said.

Richard held up one hand.

She stopped.

"Binder."

I tossed it across the concrete floor.

It slid to his shoes.

Mom walked toward me.

I grabbed her hand.

For one second, it worked.

Then Richard opened the binder.

He saw the copies.

His face changed.

"Where is the original?"

"Somewhere you cannot reach."

The room became very still.

Richard looked at one of his men.

The man stepped toward Dante.

I raised my voice.

"If he gets hurt, every file Nolan sent goes public."

Richard looked at me.

"Nolan sent you files?"

There.

Real surprise.

"He chose himself over you."

Richard's face hardened.

"He always was weak."

A phone buzzed in my pocket.

One signal.

Miriam's agreed cue.

Federal agents were in position.

I looked at Dante.

He saw the change in my face.

Richard did too.

His eyes narrowed.

"What did you do?"

Before I could answer, a side door crashed open.

Voices shouted commands.

The room erupted.

Mom dropped behind a steel table with me.

Dante drove his shoulder into the man beside him and went down with him.

Richard ran toward a rear exit.

Agents flooded the floor.

I heard Nolan's name shouted somewhere outside.

Then one of the emergency lights shattered.

Darkness swallowed half the room.

Someone grabbed my arm.

My body reacted before thought.

I twisted free and drove my knee forward.

The man cursed and stumbled.

Not Richard.

Luca.

"Mia, stop."

I stared at him.

"What are you doing here?"

"Getting you out."

"How did you get inside?"

His face changed.

Too late.

I understood.

"You told Richard we were coming."

"No."

"Then how are you inside before the agents?"

He reached for me.

I stepped back.

"Don't."

Luca froze.

Dante appeared behind him, wrists free now, blood at his lip.

He looked at his nephew.

"Answer her."

Luca's face collapsed.

"I had to."

Alessandra's brother went completely still.

"Why?"

Luca looked toward the rear exit where Richard had disappeared.

"Because he has my son."

Dante's face changed.

"You don't have a son."

Luca started crying.

"You don't know everything about me either."

And in the middle of what should have been a rescue, we discovered Richard Pierce had been holding a secret child over Luca for three years.

The betrayal had not begun at table nine.

It had begun long before any of us knew who was being threatened.
