CHAPTER 2 — The Silence That Broke Him

The silence on the other end of the call didn’t end.

It expanded.

Like a crack spreading through glass.

Grant Kingsley stood in the middle of St. Bartholomew’s Church, surrounded by hundreds of guests, but none of them felt real anymore.

“Claire…” he finally said, voice lower. Controlled. Forced.
“What did you just say?”

Across the aisle, Sienna Vale turned slightly toward him, sensing the shift in his energy.

The organ music still played softly, but it felt distant now—like it belonged to another life.

Claire’s voice came through again. Calm. Too calm.

“I said I gave birth.”

A baby cried faintly through the speaker.

That sound didn’t belong in Grant’s world.

Not in marble churches.
Not in billion-dollar weddings.
Not in the life he carefully curated after destroying hers.

His grip tightened around the phone.

“That’s not possible,” he said immediately.

A pause.

Then Claire—soft, almost detached:

“You made sure I was ‘barren,’ remember?”

The word hit harder than anger.

It hit like evidence.

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“That was the medical report,” he snapped. “It was verified—”

“By your doctor,” Claire interrupted. “The one you paid.”

The church suddenly felt too warm.

Too small.

Grant turned away from the altar, walking toward the side corridor as murmurs began behind him.

Sienna followed one step.

“Grant,” she whispered. “What’s happening?”

He didn’t answer.

May you like

Because for the first time in six months…

He didn’t control the narrative anymore.
