CHAPTER 4 — The Wedding That Never Finished

The Plaza Hotel ballroom glittered like a promise that no longer meant anything.

Guests still arrived.

Champagne still poured.

Sienna Vale stood alone near the stage, watching the doors more than the crowd.

Because Grant Kingsley had not returned.

Thirty minutes passed.

Then forty.

Whispers started quietly.

“What’s going on?”

“Is he okay?”

“Did something happen at the church?”

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Grant walked in.

But he wasn’t the same man who left.

No smile.
No posture of victory.
No rehearsed confidence.

Just silence.

Heavy and human.

He didn’t look at Sienna.

He didn’t look at the guests.

He walked straight past everything built for his “new life.”

And picked up his phone again.

Claire answered almost immediately.

As if she had been waiting.

“I need to see her,” Grant said.

A pause.

Then Claire:

“You already did.”

Grant’s breath caught.

“…what?”

Claire’s voice softened, but only slightly.

“The baby you just heard crying…”

Another pause.

Longer this time.

“She’s yours, Grant.”

The ballroom noise faded completely in his mind.

No music.

No guests.

No wedding.

Just the sound of a newborn cry echoing through everything he thought he had won.

Grant Kingsley stood frozen in the center of his own ruined empire.

And for the first time in his life…

He had nothing to say.
