CHAPTER 2 — THE EVIDENCE THEY NEVER KNEW EXISTED

Nobody resisted.

Not at first.

Shock had a way of making even the most powerful people forget how to move.

The investigators spread across the penthouse with quiet precision, each person already knowing exactly where to go.

No shouting.

No dramatic announcements.

Only efficiency.

Richard Whitmore stood perfectly still near the entrance while agents photographed every room before anyone could touch a single object.

Damien finally found his voice.

"This is illegal."

One financial investigator calmly looked up.

"No, Mr. Cross."

He held up a signed federal warrant.

"This is overdue."

Veronica slowly rose from the floor, forcing composure back onto her face.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

Richard answered before anyone else could.

"For eight years, you created shell companies."

"For six years, you transferred investor money through charitable foundations."

"For four years, you bribed auditors."

"And three months ago..."

He looked directly at Damien.

"...you made your biggest mistake."

Damien folded his arms.

"And what was that?"

"You became impatient."

One investigator connected a forensic laptop to the home's smart entertainment system.

Every television inside the penthouse came alive.

The guests watched security footage from different dates.

A warehouse.

Private meetings.

Cash exchanges.

Hidden cameras.

Damien secretly threatening executives.

Veronica signing altered trust documents.

Board members accepting envelopes stuffed with cash.

The room turned colder with every minute.

One elderly investor stumbled backward into a chair.

"My retirement..."

A widow covered her mouth.

"My husband's foundation..."

Someone else whispered,

"We invested everything."

Richard nodded toward the forensic accountant.

She projected a flowchart across the eighty-inch display.

Money moved through thirty-two companies.

Four countries.

Hundreds of fraudulent transactions.

Everything eventually returned to one destination.

Cross Global Holdings.

Damien laughed.

Forced.

"You think charts prove crimes?"

The accountant smiled politely.

"No."

She pressed another key.

"Your signatures do."

The screen zoomed into hundreds of authenticated digital records.

Every transfer carried Damien's encrypted authorization.

Every fraudulent trust amendment contained Veronica's biometric signature.

Silence swallowed the room again.

Then the homicide detective stepped forward.

"We're not finished."

Every eye turned.

Richard closed his eyes for only a second.

This was the part he had hoped would never become necessary.

The detective placed a photograph on the marble island.

A young woman smiled back from the picture.

Emily Dawson.

Former Cross Financial auditor.

Official cause of death:

Suicide.

The detective quietly corrected the record.

"She didn't take her own life."

Another folder opened.

Autopsy revisions.

Phone records.

GPS data.

Security footage recovered only two weeks earlier.

Emily had discovered the laundering network.

She had scheduled a meeting with federal investigators.

She never arrived.

Damien's confidence cracked for the first time.

His breathing changed.

Richard watched carefully.

Predators always believed money could erase evidence.

They never expected technology to remember everything.

Then another investigator approached.

"Sir..."

"We recovered the deleted server."

Damien's face went white.

Because deleted wasn't the same as destroyed.

May you like

And inside that server...

Was every crime they had ever committed.
