CHAPTER 4 — THE LAST EMPIRE TO FALL

One year later.
The Cross name no longer crowned Manhattan skyscrapers.
Its logo had disappeared from stock exchanges.
Corporate headquarters stood empty.
Assets had been seized.
Victims had been compensated through the largest restitution fund in the city's financial-crime history.
Damien Cross was serving multiple consecutive prison sentences for assault, fraud, money laundering, witness intimidation, conspiracy, and his role in Emily Dawson's murder.
Veronica accepted a plea agreement and spent the rest of her life cooperating with federal prosecutors, knowing every truthful answer only confirmed how much her family had destroyed.
Cross Global Holdings no longer existed.
Neither did the dynasty built on fear.
Across the city, another building opened its doors.
Whitmore Justice Center for Victims of Financial and Domestic Abuse.
Its founder refused to place her own portrait in the lobby.
Instead, Evelyn hung a single framed sentence near the entrance.
"Silence protects the guilty. Truth protects the future."
Every survivor who entered the building saw those words first.
Richard retired from public service a few months later.
On his final day, reporters asked him which conviction made him proudest after thirty-three years.
He surprised everyone.
"It wasn't a conviction."
"It was watching my daughter remember who she was."
That evening they shared dinner on the rooftop terrace of Evelyn's new office.
No bodyguards.
No fear.
No whispered lies.
Only family.
Richard noticed the faint scar beneath Evelyn's makeup.
It had never completely disappeared.
Neither had the memories.
But scars no longer represented weakness.
They represented survival.
As the sun disappeared behind the Manhattan skyline, Evelyn slipped the old leather notebook into her briefcase.
Not because she needed to remember the pain.
But because she wanted to remember the promise she had once made to herself.
I hope I never become someone who's afraid.
She smiled softly.
She wasn't.
Not anymore.
May you like
And for the first time since that anniversary began...
The future belonged to her.
