CHAPTER 1 — THE SILENCE AFTER THE CRY

The restaurant didn’t move.

Not a single glass clinked. Not a single chair shifted.

Even the air felt heavier now that the baby had stopped crying.

Emma stood still, holding the infant close to her chest.

The silence was wrong.

Too clean.

Too sudden.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the blanket.

Then she noticed it.

The baby’s breathing wasn’t normal.

Not weak.

Not tired.

Controlled.

Emma’s eyes flicked down.

A tiny device—hidden under the folds of the white blanket—blinked once.

Red.

Then stopped.

Her expression changed instantly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Across the room, Adrian Romano didn’t move, but his jaw tightened just slightly—as if he had been waiting for that exact moment.

One of the bodyguards spoke into his earpiece.

Then froze.

Slowly, he turned pale.

Emma looked up.

“Get everyone out,” she said quietly.

But it was already too late.

May you like

Because the restaurant doors had just locked.

From the outside.
