CHAPTER 3 — THE REAL TARGET

The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then switched to emergency red.
The entire restaurant transformed.
No longer a luxury space.
Now a containment zone.
Emma stepped back again, breathing uneven but controlled.
“You lied to me,” she said.
Adrian didn’t deny it.
Instead, he spoke quietly:
“That child isn’t a child.”
Emma looked down at the baby.
Still calm.
Still silent.
Still watching her.
Her grip loosened slightly.
The baby’s hand moved.
Not like an infant.
Like someone adjusting a tool.
Emma froze.
Then the waiter screamed from across the room.
“IT’S A TRACKER—GET IT OUT—”
Gunfire shattered the glass ceiling before he could finish.
Bodyguards reacted instantly.
Chaos erupted.
Guests dropped to the floor.
Emma backed into a marble column, shielding the baby.
Adrian moved toward her—but stopped halfway.
Because the baby slowly turned its head toward him.
And smiled.
Emma whispered:
“What is this…?”
The baby’s voice—calm, clear, adult—came out in a whisper only she could hear:
“You weren’t supposed to survive this part.”
The emergency lights shut off completely.
Darkness swallowed the room.
And in that darkness—
Emma felt the baby’s hand wrap around her wrist.
Not like a child.
May you like
Like a lock engaging.
