CHAPTER 3 — The Collapse Begins at Midnight

At 11:47 PM, Santiago Rivas learned what real power looked like.
Not shouting.
Not violence.
Silence.
His phone started ringing nonstop.
Bank executives. Investors. Partners.
All the same message:
Accounts frozen.
Credit lines suspended.
Emergency audit initiated.
He stood in the middle of his mansion like it was shrinking around him.
Beatriz was pacing now.
For the first time, she wasn’t composed.
“This is temporary,” she insisted. “We can fix—”
“No,” Santiago snapped.
He turned toward the window.
Across the garden, my father was still there.
Waiting.
Not leaving.
Just… watching.
Like the end was already scheduled.
I sat on the sofa, holding my stomach.
No longer afraid.
Just… done.
Santiago suddenly came toward me.
His voice dropped.
“Valeria… tell him to stop this.”
I looked at him.
Really looked.
The man I once believed I loved.
The man who planned to erase me and take my child.
And I realized something terrifying.
He wasn’t angry anymore.
He was afraid.
For the first time.
“I can fix this,” he whispered. “We can leave. Start over. Just you and me.”
I shook my head slowly.
“No.”
That was it.
One word.
And something inside him snapped.
He grabbed my wrist.
Hard.
Beatriz didn’t stop him this time.
“Don’t do this,” he hissed. “You think your father will protect you forever?”
Then—
The lights in the mansion flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And went out.
Complete darkness.
The emergency generators failed immediately.
Outside, cars screeched to a halt on the private road.
Santiago froze.
“That’s impossible…”
A voice came from the dark hallway.
Calm.
Close.
Ricardo Salazar.
“It’s done.”
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Approaching.
A single beam of light from a security flashlight cut through the darkness.
And revealed something none of us expected.
Not just my father.
But a second man behind him.
Holding legal custody documents.
Stamped.
Finalized.
Legal.
Santiago’s voice broke.
“What… is that?”
My father answered without looking at him.
“Proof that the child you thought you owned…”
A pause.
“…was never yours to begin with.”
My breath stopped.
Beatriz stumbled backward.
Santiago stared at the papers.
Then at me.
Then at my stomach.
“No…” he whispered.
The second man stepped forward.
And spoke the final sentence of the night:
“The court approved emergency custody transfer.”
Santiago Rivas turned pale.
And then—
The front gates of the mansion opened again.
Slowly.
As if someone had been waiting for this exact moment.
And the person walking in…
made my blood turn cold.
Because he wasn’t part of my father’s plan.
And he wasn’t part of Santiago’s either.
He was someone from my past.
May you like
Someone I had sworn would never find me again.
And he smiled when he saw me.
