CHAPTER 4 — The Man I Buried Came Back Alive

I couldn’t breathe.

Not because of fear.

Because recognition hits harder than violence.

He stepped into the mansion like he still belonged there.

Like time hadn’t touched him.

Like I hadn’t spent years running from his name.

“Hello, Valeria,” he said softly.

Santiago turned sharply.

“Who the hell are you?”

My father didn’t move.

But I saw it.

A micro-shift in his expression.

Concern.

Not fear.

Calculation.

The man smiled again.

“I’m the reason she changed her name.”

Silence collapsed.

Beatriz dropped her glass.

It shattered.

My legs weakened.

Because the truth wasn’t coming.

It had already arrived.

Ricardo finally spoke.

Low.

Controlled.

“Get out.”

But the man shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

And then my father.

“I didn’t come to take her.”

A pause.

“I came to take what she stole from me.”

My stomach dropped.

Santiago laughed suddenly.

Hysterical.

“You see? Even your perfect daughter has secrets.”

But I wasn’t listening anymore.

Because the man stepped forward and placed a single envelope on the table.

Inside—

A DNA report.

Dated eight months ago.

My father reached for it.

Stopped.

The man whispered:

“That baby isn’t only yours, Ricardo.”

My vision blurred.

The room tilted.

Santiago’s voice cracked:

“What does that mean?”

The man finally smiled fully.

Cold.

Certain.

And said the words that shattered everything:

“It means the child she’s carrying… is not the first lie in this family.”

My father slowly looked at me.

For the first time…

he didn’t know what to say.

And then—

My water broke.

Right there.

On the marble floor.

And the man from my past whispered one final sentence:

May you like

“We need to talk… before that baby is born.”
