CHAPTER 1 — “THE MAN WHO STOPPED SMILING”

The silence in the mansion broke first—not with a sound, but with pressure.

Santiago still hadn’t moved.

His smile was gone now.

Completely.

Ricardo Salazar stepped forward, his black coat brushing against the marble floor like a final warning. Two attorneys followed without a word. The security team fanned out behind him, blocking every possible exit.

Beatriz tightened her grip on the wine glass.

For the first time that night, her hand trembled.

“Ricardo…” she said carefully. “This is a private family matter.”

Ricardo didn’t look at her.

He looked at Santiago.

“You touched my daughter,” he said quietly.

Not a question.

A fact.

Santiago swallowed.

For years, he had negotiated with ministers, investors, cartel-linked intermediaries—men who never blinked under pressure.

But this was different.

Because pressure didn’t arrive alone.

It arrived with consequences.

Valeria slowly pushed herself up from the floor, one hand still protecting her belly.

Her eyes met her father’s.

No tears now.

Only relief.

Santiago finally forced a laugh.

“This is a misunderstanding,” he said. “She’s my wife.”

Ricardo tilted his head slightly.

“No,” he replied.

“She was your mistake.”

A lawyer stepped forward and placed a folder on the table.

Inside: bank freezes, asset seizures, forensic reports of abuse, surveillance timestamps.

Santiago glanced at it.

Then his face changed.

May you like

For the first time…

he understood.
