CHAPTER 2 — “THE LEAK”

Two weeks later.
A confidential email is sent anonymously to a Wall Street journalist.
Subject line:
“THE TESTS ARE FAKE.”
Inside Theranos, panic is invisible but real.
Employees lower their voices. Meetings are shorter. Doors close faster.
A young lab worker sits in a restroom stall, shaking as he reads the news on his phone.
Headline:
“Theranos technology under internal investigation.”
He whispers to himself:
“It’s happening…”
Back in the executive floor, Elizabeth is surrounded by lawyers.
A man places a folder on the table.
Lawyer:
“They’re opening federal inquiries. This is no longer internal.”
Elizabeth finally shows something new.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Something colder.
Elizabeth Holmes:
“Then we stay ahead of it.”
Lawyer:
“You can’t outrun this.”
A pause.
Elizabeth leans forward.
Elizabeth Holmes:
“Watch me.”
