Chapter 16 - THE WAREHOUSE OF EMPTY CHAIRS/

Lena Cho stood alone among the twenty chairs with a black cable fastened around her waist.
The cable disappeared beneath the banquet table.
Her face was bruised, and one sleeve of her uniform had been torn away.
She kept both hands raised so the agents watching through the drone could see she carried no weapon.
"There are pressure sensors under the floor," she called.
"If too many people enter, the doors lock and the ventilation system releases gas."
Grant whispered into his radio and canceled the federal breach.
Torres examined the grate above them.
"Can we reach her through the platform?"
"Not without stepping onto the main floor," Grant said.
Nora watched Lena.
"Where is Eli?"
"She said the warehouse is a trap."
"I heard her."
"Then Damon moved him somewhere else."
"Or he is inside a container the thermal camera cannot read."
Adrian looked across the warehouse.
Rows of shipping containers lined the far wall.
One had fresh tire marks in front of it.
A small piece of gray fabric protruded from its door.
It matched Eli's jacket.
Nora saw it at the same moment.
She started toward the tunnel ladder.
Adrian caught her arm.
"That is exactly what they want."
"It could be him."
"It could be fabric tied to a door."
"You do not get to make me wait."
"I get to stop you from stepping onto a floor designed to punish panic."
She pulled free.
"You talk like fear is an intellectual mistake."
"No."
Adrian lowered his voice.
"I talk like the people who took him know what a mother will do before she has time to think."
Nora looked at Lena again.
The server had begun tapping her fingers against her raised palm.
Three taps.
Pause.
One tap.
Pause.
Four taps.
Torres recognized it as a service code used by banquet staff to signal table numbers.
"Three-one-four," she said.
Grant frowned.
"Daniel's storage unit."
Lena changed the pattern.
One-seven.
"Warehouse Seventeen," Nora said.
Then Lena pointed down.
Not toward the floor.
Toward the cable around her waist.
Adrian studied the table.
The cable was not part of the gas system.
It ran into a metal case under Adrian's named chair.
A small camera watched Lena from the ceiling.
Damon expected her to remain in place.
"She is being monitored," Adrian whispered.
Torres took out a compact mirror and used it to inspect the underside of the grate.
An old maintenance rail ran above the floor toward the banquet lights.
It had once carried electrical workers over active conveyor machinery.
Grant tested the rail.
"It may hold one person at a time."
Nora began climbing before he finished.
Grant stopped her.
"I go first."
"She will trust me."
"The rail may not."
He attached a safety line and pulled himself onto the narrow track.
The metal groaned beneath his weight.
He moved above the warehouse floor, hand over hand, staying between the camera's blind zones.
Lena kept tapping as if panic had made her repetitive.
The numbers changed.
Five.
Nine.
Two.
Torres wrote them down.
"Coordinates?"
Adrian looked at the shipping labels.
Container rows were numbered by bay and stack.
Five-nine-two pointed to the refrigerated section behind the warehouse.
Eli was not in the visible container.
He was in refrigerated bay 592.
Adrian and Nora returned through the tunnel while Torres remained beneath Lena and Grant continued along the rail.
Federal agents approached bay 592 from the river side.
The refrigeration unit was running, though the warehouse power had supposedly been disconnected.
Nora placed one hand on the metal wall.
"It is freezing."
An agent cut the external lock.
The door opened onto darkness and white vapor.
Inside were rows of medical shipping crates.
No Eli.
Nora entered anyway.
Each crate bore the Orpheus symbol found in Claire's files.
The labels listed harmless botanical samples.
Portable scanners showed sealed vials packed beneath them.
Enough aconitine and sedative compounds to contaminate thousands of doses.
Adrian found a child's handwriting on one crate.
MOM, NOT HERE.
Beneath it, Eli had drawn an arrow toward a ventilation duct.
Nora climbed onto the crates and opened the grille.
Inside lay a folded map of the shipping terminal and Damon's missing cuff link.
Eli had hidden the tracker in the helicopter, then removed it when he realized Damon was monitoring its signal.
The tracker had led them to the warehouse because Eli wanted them to find the Orpheus shipment, not because he was there.
"He is thinking ahead of them," Adrian said.
Nora held the map with shaking hands.
"He should be worried about math homework."
A distant alarm sounded.
Inside Warehouse Seventeen, Grant had reached Lena.
He cut the cable without triggering the case and lifted her onto the maintenance rail.
The moment her weight left the marked square, steel shutters slammed over every door.
The ventilation fans roared.
White vapor began pouring from ceiling vents.
The trap had activated despite their care.
Torres pulled a respirator from Grant's pack and climbed toward Lena.
Grant pushed the server ahead of him on the rail.
"Move."
Lena coughed.
"The table."
"Leave it."
"The original plate is under it."
Grant stopped.
Lena pointed toward Adrian's chair.
"I sealed a sample before they took me."
The original food from the gala had survived.
It could prove Eli's warning and connect the toxin mixture to Vale Medical.
Grant looked at the vapor rising toward the rail.
He turned back.
Torres grabbed his coat.
"No."
"Get her out."
"The sample is not worth your life."
"It may be worth the boy's."
Grant dropped from the rail onto the table rather than the floor.
The place settings shattered beneath his boots.
He reached Adrian's chair and pulled the metal case from underneath.
The cable attached to Lena had been connected to a recording device, not an explosive.
Inside the case was a sealed food container and a small audio recorder.
Grant grabbed both.
The table began to collapse under him.
Torres lowered the safety line.
He jumped, caught it, and swung above the vapor.
The federal team cut through the exterior wall seconds later.
Air rushed into the warehouse.
Agents in protective gear carried Lena, Torres, and Grant out through the opening.
After Lena reached the ambulance, she refused sedation until Torres recorded her statement.
She had worked Vale events for four years while studying nursing at night.
Nora recruited her quietly after discovering Lena's younger brother had participated in a Vale Medical anxiety study.
He survived, but he lost months of memory and was later blamed for stealing medication from the clinic.
"The program destroyed his nursing-school application," Lena said.
"They called him unstable."
"I took banquet jobs because executives speak freely in front of servers."
At the gala, Lena saw Nora being forced toward the warming station by the valet.
She heard Damon order the replacement plate moved.
When Nora resisted, Lena hid the plate beneath a clean cloche and carried it into the ballroom before anyone could stop her.
"Why did you leave during lockdown?" Ward asked.
"Grant's deputy told me police wanted to question me in the basement."
"I recognized him from the clinic."
"He was one of the men who threatened my brother."
She ran through a catering exit and sealed a spoonful of the original food inside a sterile specimen container from her school bag.
Damon's people found her at the train station.
They kept her alive because they did not know where she hid the sample.
"Where did you hide it?" Nora asked.
Lena looked toward the warehouse.
"Inside the chair with Adrian's name."
"Why there?"
"Because they kept building scenes around him."
"I thought eventually someone would examine the stage instead of only the actor standing in the middle."
Adrian looked at the young woman beneath the ambulance blanket.
Another ordinary worker had taken the risk his executives claimed belonged to leadership.
"Your brother's name will be cleared," he said.
Lena's expression hardened.
"Do not offer me a future favor while my testimony is still useful."
Adrian accepted the rebuke.
"Then tell me what you need now."
"Find Eli."
"After that, make sure every patient code becomes a name."
Nora met Lena beside the ambulances.
"Where is Eli?"
Lena removed the oxygen mask.
"Damon moved him to the old river estate."
"Which estate?"
Adrian knew before she answered.
"Vale House."
The family mansion stood twenty miles north on a private bend of the Hudson.
Eleanor had lived there since Everett's death.
It contained the original boardroom, the family vault, and the dining hall where generations of Vales signed contracts between courses.
"Why tomorrow night?" Torres asked.
Lena looked at the empty-chair photograph on Grant's phone.
"Eleanor is hosting an emergency shareholder dinner."
"The public announcement says Vale Tower," Adrian said.
"That is the decoy."
"What is the plan?"
"Every director who might support Adrian or recognize Eli's shares will be served from marked bottles."
"Killed?"
"Some will die."
Lena shivered beneath a blanket.
"Others will appear confused, violent, or incompetent."
"Then Eleanor and Damon use the scandal to cancel the vote and impose emergency control."
Ward opened the recovered recorder.
A conversation played between Damon and Commissioner Reeves.
They discussed moving Orpheus compounds, silencing Nora, and ensuring that the boy signed before the dinner.
Then Eleanor's voice entered.
"No bodies at the table unless I approve them."
Damon replied.
"You approved Adrian."
"Adrian was necessary."
"And the boy?"
A pause followed.
"The boy is family," Eleanor said.
"Family is never killed until it has signed."
Nora closed her eyes.
Ward ordered immediate raids on Vale House and every known Orpheus facility.
The agents moved before sunset.
Vale House appeared empty from the road.
The gates stood open.
No guards occupied the booths.
The windows glowed warmly against the gathering dark.
A long dining table had been set in the central hall.
Twenty chairs waited beneath portraits of dead Vales.
Eli sat at the far end beside Eleanor.
Damon stood behind him.
No restraints were visible.
A pen lay before the boy.
Adrian entered with Nora, federal agents, Torres, Grant, Celeste, and Ward.
Eleanor lifted her wineglass.
"You found the invitation."
Ward raised the warrant.
"Step away from the child."
Eleanor smiled.
"That will be difficult."
A screen behind the dining table illuminated.
Live images showed twelve hostages seated in separate rooms throughout the estate.
Board members.
Regulators.
Chef Louis Marceau, pale but alive.
Each person wore a medical patch connected to a locked device.
Damon held a tablet displaying their heart rhythms.
"If federal agents cross the mosaic floor," he said, "the devices inject the contents."
The agents stopped at the edge of the tiled hall.
Eli looked at Adrian.
"I didn't sign."
"I know."
Eleanor gestured toward the empty chairs.
"Then sit down."
