Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT ADRIAN LOST EIGHT HOURS

Adrian remembered arriving at Blackridge Lodge at three seventeen on the afternoon of May sixteenth.
He remembered the cedar smell in the lobby and the rain striking the tall windows.
He remembered arguing with Damon about a European acquisition.
He remembered Celeste placing a cup of tea beside his hand and telling him he looked tired.
After that, there was nothing for eight hours.
His next memory began at eleven forty-two that night.
He woke on the floor of his private suite with his shirt half unbuttoned and a cut across his palm.
Celeste sat beside him crying.
Damon stood near the window.
They told him he had mixed medication with alcohol, become aggressive, and fallen against a table.
Adrian had believed them because both people told the same story.
He had believed the physician who arrived with a sedative already prepared.
He had believed the security report stating that no one else entered the suite.
He had even apologized to Celeste for frightening her.
Now, in a police interview room at sunrise, Detective Torres placed the ledger in front of him and asked him to remember what had never been his memory.
"Your signature appears on three documents dated that night," she said.
"A transfer authorization, a personal guarantee, and an amendment to your medical proxy."
"I signed none of them knowingly."
"That word matters."
"I was poisoned."
"Likely drugged, but the aconitine may not explain total memory loss."
"Then there was something else."
"Your hospital samples are being tested."
Nora sat behind the one-way glass with Eli and a victim advocate.
Grant waited in another room under formal questioning by internal affairs.
Celeste and Damon had both left the hospital before Eli's kidnapping.
Their attorneys claimed they went home separately.
Police surveillance now followed them, but neither had been arrested.
The evidence was suspicious, fragmented, and contaminated by too many planted objects.
Torres turned a laptop toward Adrian.
"We recovered this from Daniel's flash drive."
The screen showed grainy footage from Blackridge Lodge.
The timestamp read 6:03 p.m. on May sixteenth.
Adrian entered his suite with Celeste beside him.
He moved unsteadily.
At 6:11, Damon arrived carrying a leather folder.
At 6:19, Adrian sat at the desk.
Celeste placed a pen in his hand.
Damon turned pages and pointed to signature lines.
Adrian signed each one.
His eyes were open.
His posture was upright.
But his movements were slow and obedient, as if commands had to travel through deep water to reach him.
Torres paused the video.
"Do you recognize the footage?"
"No."
"Do you remember the room?"
"Yes."
"Do you remember signing?"
"No."
She played the next segment.
Celeste left at 6:42.
Damon remained.
He poured amber liquid into two glasses and placed one in Adrian's hand.
Adrian drank.
At 7:05, a third person entered.
The figure wore a hooded raincoat and kept their face turned from the camera.
Damon stood immediately.
Adrian did not react.
The hooded person placed another document on the desk.
Adrian signed it.
Then the person removed a small blue bottle from a pocket and handed it to Damon.
Torres froze the frame.
"Can you identify this person?"
The image was too dark.
Only the left hand was visible.
A heavy ring glinted on one finger.
"No."
"Your father wore a ring like that."
Adrian looked at her.
"My father was dead by then."
"I know."
"Then why say it?"
"Because the ring is visible in twenty-seven public photographs of Everett Vale."
"Anyone could own a copy."
"Yes."
Torres leaned back.
"But Daniel labeled the file E.V. RETURNED."
Adrian stared at the frozen figure.
"Daniel was dead when this was recorded."
"The camera system sent encrypted backups to a server he created before his death."
"Then someone else labeled it."
"Possibly Nora."
"She told you she did not know where the archive was."
"She may have lied."
The suspicion angered him.
Then he remembered that Nora had survived six years by trusting no one.
"What does she say?"
"She says she never saw this file."
"Do you believe her?"
"I believe she believes that answer."
Adrian looked again at the ring.
His father had worn the black onyx signet every day from the age of thirty.
It had been buried with him.
Adrian had watched the coffin close.
"Who had access to my father's personal effects after his death?"
"Your family, household staff, and the funeral home."
"Celeste arranged the funeral."
"So did your mother."
Adrian looked at Torres.
Eleanor Vale had not attended the gala.
She claimed migraines made crowded rooms unbearable.
She had called Adrian every morning since his collapse in May and urged him to reduce his workload.
She had also asked Celeste to oversee his medication because a wife should know when her husband was becoming weak.
The memory turned sour.
"You think my mother was at Blackridge."
"I think someone wanted Daniel's archive to make us think Everett Vale returned from the dead."
"That is not an answer."
"It is the only honest one."
An officer opened the interview-room door.
"Detective, you need to see the press conference."
A television in the operations room showed Celeste standing on the front steps of the Vale residence.
She wore no diamonds now.
Her face was pale, and her voice shook as she addressed a wall of microphones.
Damon stood several feet behind her beside two board members.
"My husband is a brilliant man," Celeste said.
"But he has been struggling with a serious medical condition that affects his memory, judgment, and behavior."
Adrian felt every officer in the room avoid looking at him.
Celeste continued.
"For months, our family has tried to protect his privacy."
"Last night, that private struggle became dangerous."
She paused as cameras flashed.
"Adrian accused me of attempting to take his life."
"He frightened our staff and manipulated a vulnerable child into repeating a false story."
Eli entered the operations room with Nora behind him.
He stared at the screen.
"I wasn't manipulated."
Nora put a hand on his shoulder.
Celeste lifted a folded paper.
"This morning, with great sadness, I petitioned the court for an emergency protective order."
Adrian turned to Torres.
"On what grounds?"
"We did not know about this."
The press conference continued.
"I have also asked the board to maintain Adrian's suspension until independent physicians determine whether he can safely resume his responsibilities."
A reporter shouted a question about the poison.
Celeste's expression became pained.
"The toxin found in Adrian's blood was also found in a bottle bearing the child's fingerprints."
"I believe Nora Brooks used her son to exploit my husband's illness and frame me for financial gain."
Nora made a strangled sound.
Eli stepped toward the television.
"She knows that's not true."
On-screen, Damon moved closer to Celeste as if to support her.
Another reporter asked about their relationship.
Celeste shook her head.
"Damon is a loyal friend to both of us."
Adrian watched Damon's hand hover near the small of her back without touching.
It was the gesture of a man who had practiced restraint in public.
Torres's phone rang.
She listened and swore.
"The judge granted the temporary order."
"Based on a press conference?"
"Based on medical records, sworn statements from Celeste and Damon, and security footage from Blackridge."
"The footage shows them drugging me."
"Not the footage they submitted."
Torres opened the court filing on her tablet.
A video link showed Adrian inside the Blackridge suite.
He stumbled toward Celeste, grabbed her wrist, and shoved her against a wall.
The clip contained no earlier footage of her placing tea beside him or guiding his hand across documents.
It showed only a confused man becoming violent.
Adrian watched himself and felt sick.
"I do not remember that."
Celeste's voice played from the recording.
"Adrian, you're hurting me."
He released her and staggered backward.
Damon entered and restrained him.
The clip ended.
Eli looked at Adrian differently for the first time.
Not with distrust.
With fear.
Adrian saw it and stepped away from him.
"I would never hurt you."
Eli nodded, but he moved closer to Nora.
The protective order required Adrian to surrender his firearms, vacate the marital residence, avoid Vale Global offices, and remain at least five hundred feet from Celeste.
It also authorized a psychiatric evaluation within twenty-four hours.
The protective order also included statements from four household employees.
One said Adrian wandered the east corridor at night and accused the staff of moving paintings.
Another said he demanded that every bottle of water be opened in front of him.
A driver described Adrian ordering the car to stop because he believed they were being followed.
The statements sounded paranoid until Grant checked the dates.
On the night of the paintings, security logs showed a crate leaving the private gallery under Damon's authorization.
The missing water bottles came from the first shipment later connected to Vale Medical.
The car Adrian believed was following him belonged to a shell company in Daniel's ledger.
"They used real danger to document imaginary illness," Torres said.
Adrian read the employee names.
Two had received promotions.
One had received a house from a Vale trust.
The driver had disappeared after signing the affidavit.
"Find him," Adrian said.
"We are trying."
"No."
He pointed at the page.
"Find out whether he is alive."
Eli stood near the one-way glass, listening.
"Did you know people were following you?"
"Part of me did."
"Which part?"
Adrian considered the question.
"The part everyone taught me not to trust."
Eli nodded as if that made sense.
"Mom says your stomach knows things before your head admits them."
"My stomach had a terrible year."
The boy almost smiled.
Then he looked at the Blackridge video again.
"When you pushed her, did you know it was her?"
Adrian did not hide behind the drug.
"I knew someone was holding my arm."
"Were you scared?"
"Yes."
"She made you scared and then filmed what you did."
"Yes."
"That doesn't make pushing okay."
"No."
Eli studied him for several seconds.
"Adults usually say sorry and then explain why it wasn't their fault."
"I am trying not to."
"You're not very good at it yet."
"No."
The answer seemed to satisfy him more than a polished apology would have.
Adrian understood then why Eli had trusted his hesitation at the dinner table.
The boy did not expect adults to be perfect.
He expected them to stop pretending certainty when another person's life depended on it.
Damon had become acting chief executive.
Celeste controlled Adrian's voting proxy.
In one night, they had taken his home, his company, his reputation, and the certainty of his own memory.
Grant entered the operations room under escort.
"The club's executive server was wiped ten minutes ago."
Torres stared at him.
"Who accessed it?"
"Adrian's credential."
Adrian looked at the badge clipped to his borrowed shirt.
His own access card was gone.
Grant held up a printed log.
"The login came from inside police headquarters."
Every person in the room stopped moving.
