Chapter 2 — The Phone Call That Erased Her Empire

The nursery remained deathly quiet.
Margaret laughed.
A slow, confident laugh.
She folded her arms across her silk blouse and looked at her son with pity.
"Daniel... you're threatening your own mother because of her?"
Emily lowered her eyes, still shielding the baby inside the crib.
She knew that look.
Margaret always won.
Always.
Daniel never answered.
Instead, he slipped his phone back into his pocket.
Thirty seconds later—
Margaret's own phone buzzed.
Then buzzed again.
And again.
Her smile faded.
She glanced down.
Bank Alert.
"Corporate accounts temporarily frozen."
Another notification.
"Your position as Chairwoman has been terminated by unanimous board vote."
Another.
"Security access revoked."
Color drained from her face.
"What..."
Her fingers trembled as she opened another email.
"Effective immediately, all assets held under the Whitmore Family Trust have been reassigned according to the Founder’s Final Amendment."
"No..."
She looked up at Daniel.
"You can't do this!"
His voice stayed perfectly calm.
"I didn't."
"You did."
"My father did."
Silence.
Emily slowly lifted her head.
Daniel walked toward the bookshelf.
He reached behind a framed family portrait.
Hidden there—
a sealed envelope.
Yellowed with age.
The handwriting on the front read:
For Daniel. Only after I am gone.
Margaret stopped breathing.
"You... found it..."
Daniel looked at her without emotion.
"I've had it for six months."
May you like
"I was waiting to see if you had changed."
"You didn't."
