Chapter 3 — The Secret No One Was Supposed to Know

Daniel carefully opened the envelope.

Inside—

a notarized letter.

A flash drive.

And dozens of photographs.

He placed everything onto the nursery table.

Emily stared in confusion.

Margaret suddenly lunged forward.

"Don't!"

But Daniel caught her wrist.

For the first time in his life...

he pushed his mother away.

Not violently.

Simply enough to tell her—

she no longer had power over him.

He plugged the flash drive into the television mounted above the nursery dresser.

A recording began.

The room filled with the voice of Daniel's late father.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then Margaret has become exactly the person I feared."

Emily covered her mouth.

Daniel stood frozen.

His father's image continued.

"I built this company."

"But Margaret wanted control."

"I discovered she forged documents..."

"...bribed board members..."

"...and drove away every person who stood between her and my fortune."

The screen changed.

Bank transfers.

Secret contracts.

Audio recordings.

Security footage.

Years of evidence.

Then came the final sentence.

"If Margaret ever harms Daniel's wife or child..."

"...remove her from every position."

"...and give control of everything to Daniel and Emily equally."

Margaret collapsed into the nursery chair.

"No..."

"He promised to destroy me..."

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

May you like

"No."

"He promised to protect us."
