CHAPTER 2 — “THE FILE THEY NEVER DESTROYED”

That night, Ethan was not allowed inside the house.

The convoy stayed parked in the distance like a warning.

Lily refused to let go of his hand.

So he sat on the wooden steps outside Clara’s home.

Like a man suspended between two wars.

Clara stood above him.

Her voice was quiet.

“You told me it was over.”

Ethan didn’t look up.

“It was. For me.”

A long pause.

Then Clara spoke again.

“What did you do out there?”

That question hit deeper than bullets ever could.

Ethan finally reached into his duffel bag.

Slow.

Careful.

He placed a sealed metal case on the step.

Stamped with military black ink.

NO RETURN AUTHORIZED

Lily leaned closer.

“What is that?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then answered.

“The truth.”

Clara’s voice tightened.

“You brought it here?”

Ethan shook his head slightly.

“I never stopped carrying it.”

A faint sound echoed from the convoy.

A radio signal.

Then static.

Then one line:

“Asset confirmed. Proceed with recovery or termination.”

Clara stepped back.

Her eyes widened.

“Ethan…”

He finally looked at her.

And what she saw in his face wasn’t fear.

It was acceptance.

“I wasn’t discharged, Clara.”

“I was released on condition.”

Lily blinked.

“What condition?”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“If I ever told the truth…”

He paused.

May you like

Then finished it.

“…I stop being allowed to exist.”
