CHAPTER 3 — “THE MOMENT THEY CHOSE A SIDE”

Morning came too slowly.
The snow had stopped.
But the silence had not.
The convoy was closer now.
Too close.
Clara stood in front of the house with Lily behind her.
Ethan stood beside them.
Not hiding anymore.
Not running.
Just deciding.
The officer’s voice came through a loudspeaker.
“Sergeant Vale. Final compliance required.”
Clara whispered.
“Just go with them.”
Ethan shook his head.
“If I go back… I disappear.”
Lily tugged his sleeve.
“Dad… I just found you.”
That broke something in him.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Ethan knelt.
Held her face gently.
“I know.”
Then he stood.
And stepped forward.
Clara grabbed his arm.
“Ethan, please…”
He didn’t pull away.
But he didn’t stop either.
“I chose this war once,” he said.
“Now it chooses me.”
The convoy doors opened.
Two soldiers stepped out.
Slow.
Measured.
Then—
A sound from behind the house.
Metal unlocking.
The case.
Clara had opened it.
Ethan turned sharply.
“What did you do?”
Clara’s voice trembled.
“You said it was the truth.”
Inside the case—
documents.
names.
orders.
proof.
And one final file marked:
OPERATION ARDENT HOLLOW
Ethan’s eyes went still.
Because he knew that name.
But not from the army.
From somewhere worse.
From home.
And then—
Lily spoke softly.
“Dad…”
“Why is my name in there?”
Ethan froze.
The convoy weapons clicked in the distance.
Clara turned.
Confused.
And realized too late—
May you like
this was never about Ethan coming home.
It was about what came home with him.
