THE STALLION REMEMBERS / Chapter 1 / 3

Chapter 1: The Name in the Dust

The corral stayed silent long after the stallion lowered its head.

No one moved.

Not even the rancher.

The girl still stood in front of the beast, her small chest rising and falling slowly. Dust floated between them like frozen time.

Then the stallion exhaled.

A deep, shaking breath.

And it stepped forward.

One hoof at a time.

Until its massive head rested just inches from her shoulder.

The rancher tightened the rope instinctively.

“Step back,” he whispered. “Now.”

But the girl didn’t listen.

She raised her hand.

And placed it gently on the stallion’s forehead.

The animal closed its eyes.

Like it recognized a language no human had spoken in years.

A memory buried under violence.

The wind shifted.

And then—

A voice came from nowhere.

Not loud.

Not real.

But clear enough to make the rancher freeze.

“Shadow…”

The girl flinched.

“That’s not his name,” she whispered.

The stallion’s ears twitched violently.

For the first time, it looked afraid.

May you like

Not of the people.

But of remembering.
