CHAPTER 1 — The Gown That Knew Her Name

The chamber remained frozen.
Not a single noble dared breathe.
King Adrian stood before Elena, the scarlet coronation gown resting carefully across his arms as though it weighed more than gold.
Lady Beatrice finally found her voice.
"Your Majesty... surely this is some misunderstanding."
"It is," Adrian replied.
"But not mine."
He stopped only inches from Elena.
She instinctively stepped back.
"I... I cannot wear that."
Her voice barely carried across the silent hall.
"I don't belong here."
The king's eyes never left hers.
"No."
His answer was almost gentle.
"You belong here more than anyone."
Confused whispers exploded throughout the chamber.
Princess Celeste, who had watched silently from the balcony, slowly descended the marble staircase.
Her silver gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers.
"Father..."
Even she sounded uncertain.
"You said Mother designed that gown for my coronation."
King Adrian closed his eyes.
"For the daughter your mother hoped would return."
Every noble stared.
Return?
Lady Beatrice frowned.
"What daughter?"
The king reached beneath the gown.
Hidden inside its embroidered collar was a tiny silver crest.
A phoenix.
Half of it.
He carefully turned toward Elena.
"Do you still wear it?"
Elena blinked.
"What?"
"The necklace."
Her fingers instinctively reached beneath the neckline of her worn linen dress.
Slowly...
She pulled out an old silver pendant.
Half a phoenix.
The room gasped.
King Adrian removed the crest sewn into the gown.
The two broken pieces slid together perfectly.
Click.
The sound echoed across the chamber.
No force.
No effort.
As if they had waited nineteen years to become whole again.
Lady Beatrice's face drained of color.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
King Adrian's voice became heavy.
"Nineteen years ago, during the Palace Fire, my infant daughter disappeared."
"Everyone believed she died."
He looked directly at Elena.
"But she lived."
Tears filled Elena's eyes.
"I don't understand..."
Neither did the nobles.
Because only three people had known about the missing princess.
The king.
The queen.
And the woman standing beside Lady Beatrice—
The palace midwife.
She suddenly collapsed to her knees.
"I never meant..."
Every head snapped toward her.
The old woman covered her mouth in horror.
"I never meant for it to happen this way..."
Lady Beatrice slowly turned toward her.
"What are you talking about?"
The midwife looked up...
Then whispered the words that shattered the kingdom forever.
"It wasn't the fire that took the princess."
May you like
"It was us."
