CHAPTER 3 — The Queen's Last Promise

The royal seal remained untouched for nineteen years.

King Adrian's hands trembled as he lifted the letter.

"I cannot open it," he said quietly.

"It isn't mine."

He placed it into Elena's shaking hands.

Every noble watched.

Even Lady Beatrice stopped struggling.

Elena carefully broke the wax seal.

Inside was a single folded page.

The handwriting was elegant.

Steady.

Beautiful.

My dearest Elena,

If you are reading this, then fate has finally brought you home.

You were never abandoned. You were stolen.

If your father found you, forgive him. He searched until hope itself grew old.

But before you accept the crown... there is one truth no one knows.

The greatest enemy of this kingdom was never outside these walls.

It has always lived inside our family.

The chamber became deathly silent.

King Adrian frowned.

"What does she mean?"

Elena unfolded the second page.

A family tree.

Two names had been crossed out in red ink.

Lady Beatrice...

...and King Adrian.

Everyone stared.

The king himself looked horrified.

Then Elena noticed a final line written across the bottom.

Adrian is not your father. He has protected you as his own because he never learned the truth. The man who ordered your kidnapping is your true father—and he still wears a crown.

The room erupted.

King Adrian slowly stepped away from the throne as if it had suddenly become cursed.

Lady Beatrice began laughing through her tears.

"I told you."

"You never knew who your real enemy was."

Before anyone could stop her, she pulled a hidden dagger from her sleeve.

She drove it into her own chest.

With her final breath, she whispered:

"Find... the Black Crown."

She collapsed.

The dagger struck the marble floor with a metallic clang.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Elena looked from the queen's letter... to the dying woman... then to the man she had just begun to call Father.

The kingdom had recovered its lost princess.

But in the same moment...

May you like

It had discovered that the true king might still be hiding in plain sight.

THE END
