CHAPTER 1 — THE MESSAGE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

Maya stood frozen in the middle of the terminal as the second message disappeared from her screen. Around her, the airport had fully shifted from routine chaos to controlled panic. Security forces were no longer subtle. They were moving with purpose—fast, coordinated, locked onto something ahead of the boarding gate.

But not her.

That was the strangest part.

No one was stopping her. No one was questioning her. It was as if she didn’t even exist inside the unfolding emergency.

A man in a pilot uniform rushed past, shouting into his radio: “We have confirmation—terminate boarding protocol!” His voice cracked on the last word.

Maya’s breath tightened.

Terminate?

She stepped backward instinctively, pulling her phone closer as if it was the only stable thing in the world. The screen flickered for a second.

Then a new notification appeared.

“Walk away. Do not approach Gate 12.”

Her eyes darted up.

Gate 12.

That was her gate.

The announcement system suddenly came back online, but distorted, like something was interfering with the frequency.

“ALL PASSENGERS AT GATE—”

The sound cut again.

And in that silence, Maya noticed something worse:

Every camera in the terminal… had turned slightly toward Gate 12.

Not the passengers.

May you like

Not the crowd.

The gate.
