CHAPTER 3 — YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET

Maya broke free.

She ran—not toward the gate, not toward the exits, but deeper into the terminal maintenance corridor she spotted behind a service door. Alarms began sounding now. Real ones. Not distorted. Not broken.

People were finally screaming.

But it felt distant, like another world collapsing behind glass.

Her phone vibrated continuously now.

No pauses.

No silence.

Just message after message:

“KEEP MOVING.”
“DO NOT LOOK BACK.”
“YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.”

Maya stopped in a narrow service hallway.

The noise of the terminal was fading.

And suddenly—quiet.

Too quiet.

She turned her phone off completely.

Instant silence.

Then, behind her, a voice spoke from the darkness:

“You shouldn’t have come this way.”

Maya spun around.

A man stood there. Airport badge. Security clearance. But his face didn’t match the uniform. He looked exhausted… almost afraid.

“You’re Maya Lin,” he said.

She didn’t answer.

He continued anyway. “The message wasn’t a warning for you. It was a trigger.”

“A trigger for what?” she whispered.

The man hesitated.

Then said the words that froze everything:

“For them to think you were involved.”

A distant explosion-like sound echoed through the terminal system—air pressure shifting, emergency doors locking in sequence.

The man stepped closer.

“Someone used your device to mask a breach on Flight 109.”

Maya shook her head. “I never touched anything.”

“I know,” he said quietly. “That’s why you’re still alive.”

A pause.

Then the final truth dropped like a blade:

“You were never the target, Maya.
You were the cover.”

May you like

Lights in the corridor flickered once.

And went out.
