CHAPTER 1: THE IMPOSSIBLE PROMISE

The laughter inside the Bellmont Crown restaurant died the moment Adrian Valeâs right foot moved.
At first, it was only a twitch.
A tiny movement beneath the polished black fabric of his trousers.
Then his toes curled inside his shoe.
Adrian gripped the arms of his wheelchair so tightly that the veins rose along his hands.
For twelve years, he had felt nothing below his waist.
No warmth.
No pain.
No pressure.
But now something burned beneath the dirty little boyâs palm.
It traveled from Adrianâs knee to his hip like a line of fire.
âWhat did you do?â Adrian whispered.
The boy slowly removed his hand.
His face had gone pale.
âI woke them up.â
Adrian stared at him.
Around them, wealthy guests stood frozen beside untouched plates. A waiter had dropped a glass of champagne, but no one looked down at the shattered crystal.
The boy reached into his torn jacket and pulled out an old photograph.
Its corners were bent, and a dark stain covered half the image.
Adrian took it with trembling fingers.
The photograph showed a younger version of himself standing beside a woman with long dark hair.
She was holding a newborn baby.
Adrianâs breath stopped.
âElena.â
The boy nodded.
âMy mother said you would know her.â
Adrian looked at the child more carefully.
The same gray eyes.
The same small scar above the left eyebrow.
A scar that had run through Adrianâs family for generations.
âWho is your mother?â
The boy lowered his voice.
âHer name is Emma Carter.â
Adrian did not recognize the name.
Before he could ask another question, the restaurant doors opened.
Two men in black suits entered.
The boy saw them and immediately stepped backward.
Fear flashed across his face.
âThey found me.â
âWho found you?â
The boy looked at Adrianâs legs.
May you like
Then he whispered words that made Adrianâs blood turn cold.
âThe people who made sure you would never walk again.â
