CHAPTER 27: THE FIRST SON

Daniel explained that before Grace, before Eli and before the other children, Sebastian had experimented on an adult.
The subjectâs real name was Nathan Cross.
Sebastianâs first son.
Victoria turned pale.
âMy brother died when I was ten.â
âNo,â Daniel said. âYour father erased him.â
Nathan had been born with a heart condition.
Sebastian implanted experimental nerve technology into the boyâs brain and chest.
The treatment saved him.
It also gave him the ability to connect with other implants.
Unlike Grace, Nathan could not feel pain or empathy through the network.
He could only command.
âWhy didnât I know?â Victoria asked.
âBecause he made you forget,â Grace said.
She touched Victoriaâs forehead.
Victoria staggered.
Images returned.
A teenage boy locked behind glass.
Her father forcing her to watch.
Nathan promising he would someday escape.
Victoria screamed and fell to her knees.
âHe was alive.â
Daniel nodded.
âAnd Sebastian was afraid of him.â
Every screen in the clinic turned black.
Nathan appeared.
He looked approximately forty, with a shaved head and a thin scar running down the center of his face.
âHello, Victoria.â
She stared at him.
âBrother?â
âYou grew up.â
Tears filled her eyes.
âSo did your lies.â
Nathan looked toward Grace.
âI have been waiting for you.â
Grace stepped behind Daniel.
Nathan smiled.
âDo not fear me. We are the only two who can free the others.â
âBy controlling them?â Grace asked.
âPeople already live under control. Governments. Employers. Fear. I merely make the chains visible.â
Adrian moved in front of the camera.
âYou used innocent people.â
Nathan studied him.
âAdrian Vale. The man who signed the first authorization.â
âIâm ending Helix.â
âYou cannot end what lives inside millions of bodies.â
The clinic doors locked.
Every guard outside turned toward Adrian.
Their eyes were empty.
Nathanâs voice filled the hallway.
âBring Grace to me, or I will make every implanted person stop breathing.â
A timer appeared.
TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.
May you like
Then Nathan added one final instruction.
âAnd bring Eli. His gift is the only thing that can make me human again.â
