CHAPTER 10: THE STATION AT MIDNIGHT

At 11:40 p.m., Adrian, Eli and Mason arrived at the abandoned Graybridge Station.
Rain fell through holes in the broken roof.
Rust covered the tracks.
Adrian wore metal braces beneath his trousers and carried a cane.
He refused to use the wheelchair.
Each step hurt, but standing made him feel less like the man his enemies had created.
At exactly 11:47, the dead station clock began to move.
The hands turned backward.
A hidden panel opened beneath the ticket counter.
Inside was a cassette recorder and a brass key.
Adrian pressed play.
Static filled the station.
Then a womanâs voice spoke.
âElena?â Adrian whispered.
âIf you are hearing this, Adrian, then Emma found you.â
His knees nearly gave way.
Elena continued.
âThey told you Daniel died because they needed you broken. They needed your company, your money and your genetic line.â
Adrian gripped the counter.
âDaniel survived. But he was taken from me. Sebastian believed our son could become the first stable carrier.â
Eli looked at Adrian.
The recording crackled.
âThe ability is not magic. It is a neurological transfer. Some children can stimulate damaged nerves through contact. But every transfer takes something from them.â
Adrian looked at Eliâs pale face.
âThey used Daniel to create others,â Elena said. âIf Eli is with you, protect him. He is not only your grandson. He is the last child who can locate Daniel.â
A loud metallic sound echoed through the station.
Mason drew his weapon.
A train light appeared in the distance.
The tracks had been abandoned for decades, yet a black train approached without sound.
It stopped before them.
One door opened.
Inside, a woman sat alone beneath a yellow light.
Her wrists were tied.
Her face was bruised.
âMom!â Eli screamed.
Emma Carter raised her head.
Before Eli could reach her, a red laser appeared on Adrianâs chest.
A voice sounded through hidden speakers.
âChoose carefully, Mr. Vale.â
Adrian looked inside the train.

Beside Emma was a second prisoner covered by a black hood.
âThe woman,â the voice continued, âor the truth beneath the hood.â
