Chapter 1 — The Woman at the Door

The heels stopped outside the nursery.

Hannah’s face turned white.

I stood between her and the door, my body suddenly cold with a kind of anger I had never felt before.

The handle turned.

Lauren Carter stepped inside holding a crystal glass of red wine.

She froze when she saw me.

Only for half a second.

Then she smiled.

“Ethan,” she said softly. “You’re home early.”

I didn’t answer.

My eyes dropped to the glass in her hand.

Then to Hannah’s wrists.

Then to my sleeping children strapped to her chest.

Lauren sighed, as if I had walked in on something mildly inconvenient.

“Before you overreact,” she said, “you should know she became hysterical.”

Hannah flinched.

Lauren noticed.

Her smile widened.

“She wanted to abandon the babies,” Lauren continued. “So I made sure she stayed where she belonged.”

I stared at my wife.

For six years, I had shared a home with this woman.

A bed.

A name.

Two children.

And now, for the first time, I was seeing her clearly.

“Untie her,” I said.

Lauren laughed once.

“No.”

The room went silent.

Even the babies seemed to sense the danger in the air.

I stepped closer.

“Untie. Her.”

Lauren’s fingers tightened around the wine glass.

“You don’t give orders in my house.”

That sentence told me everything.

Not our house.

Her house.

Her rules.

Her cruelty.

I took out my phone and called 911.

Lauren’s smile vanished.

“What are you doing?”

“Reporting a crime.”

She lunged for the phone, but I caught her wrist before she reached me.

Her eyes widened.

For the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Not sorry.

Afraid.

And that was when Hannah whispered behind me,

“Mr. Carter…”

I turned.

She swallowed hard.

“She filmed it.”

My blood went cold.

“What?”

Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.

“She set her phone on the dresser. She said no one would believe me without proof.”

Lauren’s face changed.

I had never seen her mask fall so fast.

I turned toward the dresser.

Her phone was gone.

But the little red recording light on the nursery camera was still blinking.

May you like

Lauren saw me notice it.

And suddenly, she ran.
