Chapter 5 — Noah’s Bear

Nathan Vale was found two days later in Miami.

He was living under another name.

Lauren had funded his new life while I sat at dinner with her every night, believing silence meant peace.

The police arrested him at a private marina before he could board a yacht.

Lauren denied everything until Nathan gave a statement.

Then they turned on each other.

It was almost pathetic.

Two people who had built a life on lies suddenly had no loyalty left.

Meanwhile, Hannah stayed at the hospital with Noah.

His condition worsened after surgery.

For forty-eight hours, doctors told her to prepare for the worst.

I stayed with them.

Not because I owed her.

Because she had protected my children when she had every reason to save herself first.

One night, Noah woke up while Hannah slept in a chair beside him.

He looked at me with tired eyes.

“Are you the man from the big house?”

I nodded.

He held out the blue stuffed bear.

“Mommy said this bear helped save the babies.”

I took it gently.

“It helped save a lot of people.”

Noah smiled weakly.

“Then he’s a hero.”

I swallowed hard.

“Yes,” I said. “He is.”

Noah closed his eyes again.

The next morning, I called the best pediatric specialist in the country.

By that afternoon, Noah was transferred to a private children’s hospital.

Hannah tried to refuse.

“I can’t pay for that.”

“You don’t have to.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I don’t want charity.”

“It isn’t charity,” I said. “It’s justice arriving late.”

She looked down.

For months, Lauren had made Hannah feel small.

Disposable.

Powerless.

I wanted her to know the truth.

She had been the strongest person in my house.

The court granted me temporary custody of the twins.

Lauren was denied access.

Nathan was held without bail.

The headlines came next.

CEO’s Wife Arrested.

Secret Affair Exposed.

Nanny Saves Twins.

But the headline that mattered most happened quietly inside a hospital room.

Noah opened his eyes after a dangerous night and whispered,

“Mommy?”

Hannah grabbed his hand.

“I’m here.”

He smiled.

“Can we go home soon?”

For the first time in days, Hannah cried from relief.

And I realized something painful.

Lauren had tried to destroy a mother.

But she had only revealed what real love looked like.
