Chapter 2 — The Camera Never Blinked

Lauren made it three steps into the hallway before I caught her.

Not violently.

Not with rage.

With certainty.

I gripped her arm and held her in place until the police arrived.

She screamed.

She cried.

She called me insane.

She told the officers I was drunk, unstable, abusive, confused.

But while she performed for them, Hannah stayed silent on the bed, still rocking my children with her body because her hands were tied too tightly to move.

That image ended Lauren’s performance.

The officers cut Hannah free.

The second the sheet loosened, her arms collapsed.

She gasped in pain but immediately wrapped both hands around the twins.

Not herself.

Not her wounds.

My children.

The paramedics tried to take the babies first, but Hannah shook her head.

“They’re okay,” she whispered. “Check their breathing, but don’t scare them.”

Then she looked at me.

“My son…”

I understood before she finished.

I called my driver.

“Go to Mercy Children’s Hospital. Find Noah Brooks. Make sure he has the best doctors in the building.”

Hannah broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Her face simply crumpled.

For the first time, she let someone else carry the weight.

While the paramedics examined her, I went to the nursery monitor system.

Lauren had forgotten one thing.

Our cameras did not store footage only in the house.

They backed up to a private cloud server every sixty seconds.

I opened my laptop with shaking hands.

The footage loaded.

At first, there was only the nursery.

The twins sleeping.

Hannah answering the hospital call.

Then Lauren entered.

With the wine.

With the smile.

With the words.

“Forget your son. He’s going to die.”

One officer stopped writing.

The other looked at Lauren.

Lauren’s face went empty.

I kept watching.

The slap.

The second slap.

The sheets ripping.

The knots.

The carrier buckles.

The babies crying.

Hannah begging.

Lauren smiling.

Then came the part Hannah had tried to tell me.

After tying her down, Lauren leaned close and whispered something the camera barely caught.

I turned the volume up.

Lauren’s voice filled the room.

“You know why Ethan really hired you, don’t you?”

Hannah sobbed on the video.

Lauren laughed.

“Because he doesn’t even know those babies aren’t his.”

The nursery went silent.

I stopped breathing.

Lauren slowly turned toward me.

Her eyes were no longer afraid.

They were cold again.

May you like

And then she said,

“You were never supposed to find out like this.”
