CHAPTER 29 THE NIGHT THE GATES CLOSED

Elena ran into the garden.

Rosa lay unconscious beside the fountain.

Grace stood several feet away.

The second child was gone.

“Mommy,” Grace whispered. “That girl had my face.”

Elena lifted her daughter.

Adrian searched the hedges.

Rebecca checked Rosa’s pulse.

“She is alive.”

Maya pointed toward the service road.

A black vehicle moved between the trees.

The iron gates began closing.

Elena heard the heavy locks engage.

Every light across the estate flickered.

Then the property went dark.

Emergency power should have activated immediately.

It did not.

Rebecca tried her radio.

Only static answered.

“They have blocked communications.”

Adrian ran toward the security building.

The doors locked before he reached them.

A voice came through the estate’s outdoor speakers.

“Elena Mercer.”

Grace buried her face against Elena’s shoulder.

The voice was calm.

Neither male nor female.

Digitally altered.

“You transformed the estate beautifully.”

Elena looked toward the nearest camera.

“What do you want?”

“The same thing Samuel wanted.”

“Samuel wanted justice.”

“Samuel wanted control.”

The courtyard lights came on one by one.

At the center of the old ballroom, the unconscious witness from the hospital sat tied to a chair.

He had been brought inside without triggering any alarm.

The speakers continued.

“Bring Grace to the underground archive.”

“No.”

“Then Rosa will not be the last person to collapse.”

Elena looked toward the families still inside the center.

Dozens of mothers and children were trapped behind locked doors.

Adrian returned from the security building.

“The locks are operating through the old Whitmore system.”

“I had that system removed,” Elena said.

“Someone rebuilt it beneath ours.”

Maya handed Rebecca the courthouse camera.

“There is another recording.”

“What recording?”

“The night Samuel died.”

Elena turned toward her.

“You were there?”

“My father was.”

Maya opened a hidden compartment inside the camera.

A second memory card fell into her palm.

They played the footage on Adrian’s laptop.

The video showed Mile Marker Forty-One.

Samuel’s damaged car rested beside the road.

Adrian’s younger self drove away with Rebecca’s mother and the infant.

Minutes later, another Adrian arrived in a different vehicle.

Same face.

Same height.

Same clothing.

The double approached Samuel.

Samuel said something the camera could not capture.

The double struck him and opened the car’s fuel line.

Then Captain Hale arrived.

He did not stop the attack.

He handed the double a silver hawk pin.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

“My father knew Adrian had a double.”

The footage continued.

The double turned toward the camera.

For one clear second, his face filled the frame.

He looked almost identical to Adrian.

But he was older.

A thin scar crossed his chin.

Elena looked at her brother.

“Who is he?”

Adrian whispered a name Elena had never heard.

“Julian Mercer.”

“Another brother?”

“My twin.”

Elena stared at him.

“You never told me you had a twin.”

“I thought he died when we were children.”

The speakers activated again.

“No, Adrian.”

The altered voice disappeared.

This time the voice was natural.

It was Adrian’s voice.

“I did not die.”

A man stepped onto the balcony above the ballroom.

May you like

He had Adrian’s face.

And Samuel’s ring on his hand.
