CHAPTER 5: THE MISSING BABY

Adrian shut down three interstate exits within twenty minutes.

Rebecca activated an emergency child-abduction alert.

Police searched every private medical transport company in Georgia.

The black ambulance did not exist in any registry.

Its license plate belonged to a school bus destroyed in a fire twelve years earlier.

Elena tried to leave her hospital bed.

Two nurses stopped her.

“My baby is out there,” she cried. “You cannot expect me to lie here.”

Adrian stood in the doorway.

“I will bring her back.”

“You promised she was safe.”

The accusation struck harder than any courtroom defeat.

Adrian walked to her bed.

“You are right. I failed.”

Elena’s anger broke into tears.

“Then fix it.”

The first useful clue came from a traffic camera.

The ambulance entered an underground tunnel connected to an abandoned medical complex once owned by Whitmore Health Partners.

Police surrounded the property.

Inside, they found the ambulance, discarded uniforms, and a portable incubator.

Grace was not there.

But someone had left a phone behind.

The device contained one outgoing call made immediately after the abduction.

The number belonged to Judge Malcolm Voss.

Rebecca obtained a warrant.

Voss was arrested at his home before dawn.

He denied everything until detectives showed him the call record and the five-million-dollar payment.

Then he asked for protection.

“Victoria Whitmore ordered the transfer,” he said. “The baby was supposed to be taken to a private airfield.”

“Which airfield?”

Voss hesitated.

Rebecca placed a conspiracy charge in front of him.

“Talk now, or spend the rest of your life explaining why you helped steal a premature infant.”

The airfield was outside Macon.

Adrian and state police arrived minutes before a private jet began taxiing.

A black SUV blocked the runway.

Officers surrounded the aircraft.

Grace was found inside with a nurse, two security contractors, and Victoria Whitmore.

Victoria sat calmly in a cream suit, holding the baby as though she were traveling with family.

“You could have killed her,” Adrian said.

“I was saving her.”

“From her mother?”

“From the Mercer name.”

Adrian took Grace carefully from her arms.

The baby stirred against his chest.

For the first time in twelve hours, he breathed.

Victoria was handcuffed beside the plane.

Even then, she smiled.

“You think this ends with me?”

“It begins with you.”

“No, Adrian. It began with your father.”

Adrian stopped.

Their father, Samuel Mercer, had died in a car accident when Elena was sixteen.

He had been a state investigator assigned to public corruption cases.

Victoria claimed Samuel had discovered the Whitmore political network twenty years earlier.

He planned to expose it.

Three days before his death, he met privately with Thomas Whitmore.

The official report called the crash an accident.

Victoria called it a warning.

Adrian did not believe her.

Then she gave him a name.

“Ask Rebecca Shaw who removed your father’s case files from state archives.”

Adrian looked toward Rebecca.

Her face had changed.

She knew something.

Back at the hospital, Grace was returned to Elena.

The nurses placed the baby against her chest.

Elena closed her eyes as Grace’s tiny hand touched her skin.

“You came back,” she whispered.

Adrian stood beside them, but his attention remained on Rebecca.

Later, in the hallway, he confronted her.

“What did Victoria mean?”

Rebecca looked exhausted.

“When I was a junior prosecutor, I was assigned to review old corruption cases. Your father’s file was missing.”

“Who removed it?”

“My supervisor.”

“Name.”

“Senator Daniel Hart.”

Hart was one of the most powerful political figures in Georgia.

He had supported judges, governors, prosecutors, and corporate projects for decades.

He was also expected to announce a presidential campaign.

Adrian understood immediately.

Grant was not the top of the conspiracy.

Victoria was not the top.

The Whitmore empire had protected someone far more powerful.

That night, Senator Hart appeared on television.

He condemned the courthouse violence and promised a full investigation.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

“No family, regardless of wealth or influence, is above the law.”

Adrian watched from Elena’s hospital room.

His phone vibrated.

A photograph appeared from an unknown number.

It showed Samuel Mercer standing beside Senator Hart and Thomas Whitmore.

On the back was a handwritten date.

The night before Samuel died.

Beneath it were five words:

YOUR FATHER MADE A DEAL.
