CHAPTER 8: THE DEAD MAN’S TESTIMONY

The jet wreckage was found in a wooded area outside Augusta.

No survivors were located.

But investigators discovered something strange.

There was no evidence Charles Dane had boarded.

The passenger manifest was false.

A security camera showed a hooded man entering the aircraft, but the image was too poor for identification.

The crash had been staged to make Dane disappear.

Adrian was released when forensic analysts confirmed Grant’s phone messages were genuine.

The charges against Adrian were not dismissed, but the government’s case weakened.

Senator Hart denied involvement.

He claimed Agent Pike had acted without authorization.

Pike disappeared before he could be arrested.

Elena left the hospital with Grace under armed protection.

She did not return to the Buckhead mansion.

Adrian moved her into a secure property owned by a retired judge.

Grant filed for divorce from jail.

He also demanded a paternity test.

His lawyers claimed Elena had been unfaithful.

The accusation was another attempt to destroy her publicly.

Elena agreed to the test.

“I will not let him use Grace as a weapon,” she said.

The results arrived three days later.

Grant Whitmore was not the father.

The news exploded across Georgia.

Grant called Elena a fraud.

Victoria’s lawyers argued Grace had no claim to Whitmore voting shares.

Sloane mocked Elena through a statement released by her attorney.

Even Adrian was stunned.

Elena knew she had never been unfaithful.

The test had been altered.

But proving that required tracing the sample.

The laboratory director insisted procedures were followed.

Then a technician disappeared.

Rebecca discovered the lab was owned indirectly by Whitmore Health Partners.

The same network that attempted to transfer Grace from the hospital.

A second test was ordered through an independent federal facility.

Before the result arrived, Elena received a package.

Inside was a silver baby bracelet engraved with the name Grace.

A note read:

STOP THE TEST OR SHE WILL NOT LIVE TO SEE HER FIRST BIRTHDAY.

Elena wanted to hide the threat from Adrian.

Instead, she placed it in his hands.

“I am done being frightened alone.”

Adrian nodded.

“Then we finish this together.”

The second paternity test confirmed Grant was Grace’s biological father.

The first test had been fraudulent.

Investigators arrested the laboratory director.

He named Agent Pike as the person who ordered the alteration.

Pike had not disappeared voluntarily.

He was operating from a private compound owned by one of Hart’s largest donors.

A tactical team raided the property.

They found Pike, several encrypted drives, and Charles Dane.

Alive.

Dane had been held in a basement room.

He agreed to testify in exchange for protection.

But before the government could announce his recovery, Adrian met him privately.

“Why did you accuse me?”

“Hart threatened my wife and daughter.”

“Where is the blue ledger?”

Dane looked toward the agents.

“Not here.”

“Who has it?”

“Elena.”

Adrian stared.

Dane explained that Thomas Whitmore had hidden the ledger inside the frame of a painting he gave Elena as a wedding present.

The painting hung for years in the Whitmore mansion library.

Elena had taken it when she left.

She believed it was only a landscape.

Adrian searched the frame.

Behind the canvas was a thin blue book.

The ledger documented twenty years of bribery and political control.

It included judges, senators, developers, police officials, and business leaders.

The final pages contained handwritten notes from Thomas Whitmore.

One entry read:

Grant knows more than he admits. Victoria has trained him to protect Hart at any cost.

Another read:

Sloane is not Victoria’s employee. She is Hart’s daughter.

Elena looked up.

Sloane Carlisle was not simply Grant’s mistress.

She was Senator Hart’s secret child.

And the entire affair had been arranged long before Grant met her.
