Chapter 16: The Last Ashford Authority

I performed chest compressions while the chamber filled with gas.

Victor’s blood covered my hands.

The man beneath them had tried to erase me, frame my mother, manipulate my sister, and sacrifice my crew.

Yet I continued pressing against his chest.

Not because he deserved survival.

Because his death belonged to a courtroom, not Adrian’s machine.

Vanessa regained consciousness long enough to help break the chamber’s emergency panel.

We crawled into the corridor.

I dragged Victor behind us.

The gas weakened outside the sealed room.

Rachel contacted me through the comms.

“We reached the global server. Cross is attempting to redirect the ships.”

“Father’s biometric is down.”

“We know. All targets accelerated.”

“Can you stop them?”

“Only with successor authority.”

Vanessa leaned against the wall.

“No.”

Her scan had reached ninety-five percent during exposure.

The ship’s cameras tracked her face.

Every corridor became a biometric trap.

I covered her with my coat.

“Is there another successor?”

Victor’s birth records had revealed political blood but nothing useful.

Rachel searched the family registry.

“Harbinger follows the original Ashford trust. Eldest legally acknowledged descendant.”

“Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“What happens if she renounces?”

“Authority transfers to Adrian.”

“Then no.”

Victor coughed.

His heart had restarted weakly after the implant removal.

He opened his eyes.

“There is another method.”

I lifted him against the wall.

“Speak.”

“Destroy the trust.”

“How?”

“The original charter is stored in the Sovereign archive.”

“Paper?”

“Biometric legal seal. Henry feared digital records could be altered.”

Even the empire’s founder had distrusted his own technology.

“If the charter is destroyed,” Victor continued, “Harbinger loses family authorization and enters neutral mode.”

“Where is it?”

“Bridge vault.”

Adrian waited there.

The five countdowns continued.

New York: fourteen minutes.

Norfolk: nineteen.

Miami: twenty-three.

Houston and Los Angeles had longer, but not enough.

We moved toward the bridge.

Contractors searched every deck.

Vanessa and I carried Victor between us.

He knew hidden routes built into the ship.

At one junction, we found three crew members locked inside a maintenance room.

Victor told us to leave them.

I opened the door.

He watched the rescued crew run toward emergency stations.

“You cannot save everyone,” he said.

“I know.”

“Yet you keep trying.”

“That is why people follow me instead of fear me.”

The words silenced him.

We reached a service lift beneath the bridge.

Victor used a blood code to open it.

“Adrian changed the security structure,” he warned. “He may have changed the vault.”

The doors opened.

The bridge was empty.

Screens displayed the five approaching ships.

A recording of Adrian appeared.

“Welcome, Father.”

Victor stared.

Adrian’s image smiled.

“You taught me never to stand in a room where your enemy expects you.”

The bridge doors locked.

Metal shutters covered the windows.

Harbinger began scanning Vanessa through my coat.

BIOMETRIC ACQUISITION: 97%.

We searched for the vault.

Victor removed a panel beneath the command table.

A retinal scanner waited inside.

His damaged eye failed authentication.

“Use mine,” Vanessa said.

“The vault is registered to Victor.”

I held the scanner near his face and adjusted the damaged eyelid.

Access granted.

A cylinder rose from the floor.

Inside lay the original Ashford charter.

Old paper sealed beneath glass.

Beside it was a biometric control plate.

To destroy the charter, three current family members had to consent.

Victor.

Vanessa.

Adrian.

“He designed it so no single heir could destroy the empire,” Vanessa said.

Victor almost smiled.

“Henry designed it.”

Adrian’s voice came through the room.

“And Henry understood family better than any of you.”

A section of the bridge wall became transparent.

Adrian stood in the adjacent control chamber.

Bulletproof glass separated us.

He pressed his injured hand against a scanner.

Vanessa’s acquisition reached ninety-eight percent.

“Give me the rest,” he said.

“No,” she replied.

“You spent your life begging Father to see you. I am offering you half of everything.”

“You tried to frame me for murder.”

“A temporary inconvenience.”

“You sound exactly like him.”

Adrian looked at Victor.

“That is the nicest thing you have ever said.”

The New York ship entered the harbor approach.

Ten minutes.

Cross reached the bridge systems remotely.

His voice came through my comms.

“I can delay one vessel by overloading its engines.”

“New York.”

“I need access through your biometric identity.”

“Use it.”

“You may be permanently registered as operational commander.”

“I already am.”

The New York ship slowed.

Its engines overheated.

Black smoke rose from the deck.

Countdown increased to twenty minutes.

Four others continued.

Rachel reached the adjacent control chamber.

Gunfire sounded beyond Adrian.

He turned.

That broke the facial scan.

Vanessa’s acquisition dropped from ninety-eight to ninety-six.

Harbinger required continuous confirmation.

“Keep moving,” I told her.

She circled the bridge, hiding her face from cameras.

Adrian’s guards entered behind Rachel.

Cross opened doors remotely.

Rachel fought through them.

Victor placed his hand on the charter plate.

“Consent one,” he said.

His section illuminated.

Vanessa understood.

She pressed her hand beside his.

“Consent two.”

Adrian laughed.

“You still need me.”

I examined the third scanner.

The trust required Adrian’s biometric agreement.

Not his willing agreement.

“Rachel,” I said. “We need his hand.”

She reached him through the control-room door.

They fought beside the glass.

Adrian was injured but stronger.

He struck her with a metal bar.

She fell.

Vanessa screamed.

Adrian raised the bar again.

I shot the control panel beside the glass.

The transparent wall turned opaque.

He could no longer see us.

His facial link to Harbinger broke.

Vanessa’s scan dropped further.

Then Cross’s voice came through.

“I have Adrian’s biometric sample from the warehouse.”

“Why didn’t you say so?”

“Because the charter requires current living pulse.”

Victor looked at the scanner.

“Bring the plate to him.”

The plate was connected to the cylinder.

I tore at the housing.

Wires sparked.

Adrian broke through the side door.

Blood covered his face.

He held Rachel at gunpoint.

“Stop.”

I did not.

He fired into the ceiling.

“Next one enters her skull.”

Rachel looked at me.

“Continue.”

Adrian pressed the weapon harder.

Vanessa moved between them.

“You need me.”

“Not if the cameras finish the scan.”

“They won’t.”

She raised a broken piece of mirrored glass and slashed it across her own face.

Blood covered her cheek.

The biometric system lost facial recognition.

Adrian stared at her.

For the first time, he looked horrified by what he had created.

Vanessa smiled through the blood.

“You taught me beauty was power.”

She dropped the glass.

“Now you have nothing.”

Adrian lunged toward her.

I intercepted him.

We crashed against the charter cylinder.

His injured leg buckled.

I seized his right hand and forced it toward the scanner.

He resisted.

“You cannot destroy what belongs to us!”

“It never belonged to us.”

Rachel kicked the back of his knee.

Vanessa gripped his wrist.

Together we pressed his palm against the plate.

The scanner searched for consent.

Adrian clenched his fist.

Pulse detected.

His section illuminated.

The charter seal opened.

Victor looked at me.

“Once destroyed, Ashford Maritime collapses.”

“Good.”

I removed the original document.

New York: seventeen minutes.

Norfolk: eleven.

Miami: fourteen.

Houston: twenty.

Los Angeles: twenty-two.

Adrian screamed.

I held the charter over an emergency flame.

Victor reached for it.

For one second, I thought he would stop me.

Then he placed his hand over mine.

Together, we lowered the paper into the fire.

The Ashford trust burned.

Every Harbinger screen went blank.

Across five oceans, the ghost ships lost command.

Engines shut down.

Weapons retracted.

Navigation returned to local crews.

The cities were safe.

Then the Sovereign’s system displayed a message none of us expected.

FAMILY AUTHORITY TERMINATED.

TRANSFER TO FOUNDING GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY.

Thomas Reed’s face appeared on the main screen.

The recording was live.

May you like

“Thank you, Elena,” he said.

“You have completed the transfer.”
