CHAPTER 29: THE CHILDREN WITHOUT NAMES

The lower levels of Black Pine contained sixty children.
Some had been born under witness protection.
Some had been taken from foreign officials.
Some were children of intelligence officers whose deaths were classified.
Several had families who believed they were dead.
Harbinger removed their records and converted them into assets.
The second missile would reach the facility in eighty seconds.
Mara activated the internal evacuation route.
The system rejected her.
DIRECTOR AUTHORITY CONFLICT.
She pressed her hand against the scanner.
It identified her as C-17 and Mara Ashford simultaneously.
The doors remained locked.
Elena used her master bloodline authority.
The system accepted her.
Every cell opened.
Children flooded the corridor.
Rachel led the first group toward the sea tunnel.
Vanessa carried a six-year-old boy who refused to release a photograph of a woman he called Mother.
Reed and Harris guided the older children.
Elena remained with Mara at the control station.
“How many are out?”
“Forty-two.”
The missile reached thirty seconds.
“Where are the others?”
“Medical level.”
They ran downward.
Six children lay connected to biometric machines.
Their identities were being used as templates for covert agents.
Disconnecting them incorrectly could stop their hearts.
Mara worked through the controls.
Twenty seconds.
Elena saw the missile path.
It would strike the upper facility.
The lower level might survive the initial blast but flood afterward.
“Can we move them?”
“Not before impact.”
“Then we redirect the missile.”
“With what?”
“Harbinger.”
Elena connected through the biometric interface.
The system recognized her master authority but warned that Adrian controlled military targeting.
She entered his identity conflict.
Adrian Ashford.
Adrian Reed.
Admiral Adrian Ashford.
The missile system requested confirmation from the highest-ranked version.
Elena forced the identities to compete.
The targeting system froze.
Ten seconds.
She inserted Jonathan Reed’s original record.
Adrian’s admiral identity weakened.
Command authority transferred briefly to Reed.
“Elena!” he shouted through the comms. “What did you do?”
“Redirect the missile.”
“Where?”
“Open water.”
Reed issued the command.
The missile turned three seconds before impact and exploded offshore.
The shock wave shattered Black Pine’s windows.
Water entered the upper tunnels.
Mara disconnected the children.
Their heart monitors remained stable.
They escaped through the sea passage.
Outside, Coast Guard vessels approached.
Adrian had ordered them to arrest Elena, but the officers saw sixty frightened children emerging from a supposedly abandoned facility.
No database recognized them.
Their existence itself became evidence.
News helicopters arrived.
The story spread live.
Children without names.
A secret government school.
Military missiles fired at American soil.
Adrian’s authority weakened further.
The president ordered his arrest.
But Harbinger altered the order before it reached several units.
Some received instructions to protect him.
The country’s chain of command began splitting.
Mara sat beside the children on the rescue vessel.
One girl asked her real name.
Mara had no answer.
The girl’s uniform read D-09.
Vanessa knelt beside her.
“You choose a name until we find the one you were given.”
The girl thought.
“Hope.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Then Hope it is.”
Elena watched her sister create a human identity without permission from a machine.
A name offered, not imposed.
That mattered.
Reed received medical treatment aboard the vessel.
He told Elena that Adrian’s false career could still be destroyed through Jonathan Reed’s record.
But Adrian possessed part of the original ledger.
“He can rewrite the cadet again,” Reed said.
“Then we keep restoring him.”
“He will escalate.”
“He already fired missiles at children.”
“No. He authorized a strike on a facility he believed empty.”
“You still defend him.”
“He is my son.”
“So am I your father’s daughter. Blood does not excuse design.”
Reed looked away.
Rachel brought new intelligence.
Adrian had entered Washington through a secure military route.
His false authority granted him access to the National Emergency Command Center beneath the capital.
If he reached the identity relay there, he could rewrite the presidential succession line.
“He could become commander in chief,” Vanessa said.
“Not directly,” Reed replied. “But he could erase everyone above the official he controls.”
“How many?”
“Seventeen.”
Mara checked the stolen ledger fragment.
One name appeared repeatedly across the succession network.
Vice President Nathan Cole.
Deputy Attorney General Miriam Cole’s brother.
The vice president was an anchor identity.
If Adrian replaced or controlled him, he could legally assume presidential power during a manufactured emergency.
Elena called Miriam.
No answer.
Then a national alert interrupted every device.
The president had suffered a medical emergency.
The vice president was being moved to a secure location.
Adrian appeared behind him in the broadcast.
Not as an admiral.
As National Security Director Adrian Reed.
The new role had not existed an hour earlier.
The government recognized it.
The vice president addressed the country.
“Due to coordinated military rebellion, Captain Elena Ashford has been designated the leader of an attempted coup.”
The children around Elena stared at the screen.
Federal aircraft turned toward the rescue vessel.
The vice president continued.
“Any unit assisting her will be treated as hostile.”
Miriam Cole finally called.
May you like
Her voice trembled.
“That is not my brother.”
