CHAPTER 21: TEN SECONDS TO DISAPPEAR

Ten.
The countdown echoed through the darkened corridors of the USS Resolute.
Nine.
Steel doors slammed shut across the carrier.
Eight.
Emergency lights turned blood red.
Captain Elena Ashford stood inside her quarters with handcuffs around her wrists while six armed sailors waited for orders from a system that no longer recognized her.
Seven.
On every screen aboard the ship, Adrian Ashford appeared in a decorated admiral’s uniform.
His false service record identified him as the acting director of Naval Intelligence.
The databases showed twenty-eight years of service.
Commands.
Medals.
Classified deployments.
None of it had happened.
But the system believed it.
And in the modern military, what the system believed often became truth before any human could challenge it.
Six.
Chief Daniel Harris remained between Elena and the sailors.
He had served aboard the Meridian.
A burn scar crossed his neck from the night Elena held open the collapsing bulkhead.
“Captain Ashford saved my life,” Harris said.
The security lieutenant shook his head.
“According to Naval Command, Captain Elena Ashford died seven years ago.”
“I watched her carry men through fire.”
“The woman in front of us is classified as an infiltrator.”
Five.
Elena looked at the locked door.
“Where is the countdown coming from?”
A young communications officer checked his handheld device.
“Harbinger has taken control of the carrier’s internal systems.”
“Target?”
“Unknown.”
Four.
Elena lifted her cuffed hands.
“Release me.”
The lieutenant refused.
“I have direct orders from Admiral Ashford.”
“You have orders from a man who never served.”
“His credentials are confirmed.”
Harris turned toward the lieutenant.
“So were hers this morning.”
That stopped him.
Three.
A deep vibration moved through the deck.
The carrier’s engines accelerated.
The Resolute began turning.
Two.
A navigation diagram appeared across Elena’s wall display.
The carrier was changing course toward Norfolk Naval Station.
Its weapons systems were entering automatic readiness.
One.
The countdown disappeared.
For one second, nothing happened.
Then every missile tube aboard the Resolute opened.
Targeting systems locked onto the naval station.
The attack clock reset.
Five minutes.
Adrian’s voice came over the intercom.
“Captain Elena Ashford was responsible for the destruction of Project Harbinger and the deaths connected to the Sovereign.”
Images appeared beside him.
Altered footage showed Elena activating attacks against hospitals and ports.
It showed her firing on Admiral Reed.
It showed her placing explosives aboard the Sovereign.
Every image was false.
Every timestamp looked authentic.
“She has infiltrated the USS Resolute,” Adrian continued. “Her objective is to launch a naval attack against American soil.”
The sailors surrounding Elena stared at her.
The system had created a perfect enemy.
The security lieutenant raised his weapon.
Harris stepped in front of the barrel.
“You will have to shoot me first.”
“Chief, stand aside.”
“No.”
The attack clock reached four minutes.
Elena met the lieutenant’s eyes.
“Search your personal memory.”
“What?”
“Not your orders. Not your database. Your memory. Where were you three days ago?”
He hesitated.
“On this carrier.”
“Who stood on the flight deck and received the Navy Cross?”
His eyes shifted toward the medal pinned to Elena’s uniform.
“You did.”
“What did the official record say then?”
“That you were Captain Elena Ashford.”
“And now?”
“That you are dead.”
“Which one did you witness?”
The lieutenant lowered his weapon slightly.
That was enough.
Harris seized his access key and removed Elena’s handcuffs.
The communications officer unlocked the inner maintenance panel before Harbinger could revoke his authority.
Elena led them into the service corridor.
“Where is manual weapons control?”
“Combat Information Center,” Harris replied.
“Harbinger will have sealed it.”
“There is an auxiliary link beneath the flight deck.”
They ran through red-lit passageways.
Announcements warned the crew that an armed infiltrator was aboard.
Some sailors moved to arrest Elena.
Others recognized her from the ceremony and hesitated.
The ship divided between memory and data.
Three minutes.
At Junction Twelve, a fire door lowered.
Elena dove beneath it.
Harris followed.
The communications officer was trapped on the other side.
“Keep going!” he shouted.
Elena reached the auxiliary control chamber.
The door required biometric identification.
She pressed her hand against the scanner.
IDENTITY UNKNOWN.
Harris tried his credentials.
ACCESS REVOKED.
The missile clock showed two minutes.
Elena removed Admiral Reed’s challenge coin.
The hidden chip inside contained the recording revealing Adrian’s survival.
She inserted it into the emergency port.
A command line opened.
The chip carried one surviving authentication key.
THOMAS REED — COMMAND AUTHORITY DETECTED.
For the first time, Harbinger paused.
A video message appeared.
Reed’s damaged face filled the screen.
“Elena, Harbinger will allow you to cancel the launch only if you restore Adrian’s original identity.”
The words froze her.
Adrian’s real identity was tied to criminal evidence, murder charges, and the destruction of the Sovereign.
Restoring it would expose him.
But the message continued.
“If you restore Adrian Ashford, the system will erase another registered identity in exchange.”
A list opened.
The system had already selected the replacement.
VANESSA ASHFORD.
Elena stared at her sister’s name.

The missile clock reached one minute.
To stop the attack, she had to make the world forget Vanessa had ever existed
