Chapter 1: The Hand I Removed

I did not shout.

That was the first thing Gloria noticed.

I walked into the laundry room slowly, my eyes locked on her hand twisted in my wife’s hair.

“Let go of her.”

Gloria blinked once.

Then she tried to smile.

“Daniel, honey, you’re misunderstanding.”

I stepped closer.

Lily’s hands were still in the icy water. Her shoulders trembled. Her face was pale, not from the cold alone, but from months of fear she had been swallowing in silence.

“I said,” I repeated, “let go of my wife.”

Gloria released Lily’s hair as if it had burned her.

Lily stumbled back.

I caught her before she hit the counter.

Her body felt too light in my arms.

“Daniel…” she whispered.

I looked at her swollen belly, her red hands, her soaked sleeves.

Then I looked at Gloria.

Something inside me went still.

Not calm.

Worse.

Gloria lifted her chin. “She was being lazy. Someone had to teach her responsibility.”

My voice came out low.

“She is nine months pregnant.”

Gloria crossed her arms. “Pregnancy is not a disease.”

Lily flinched.

That tiny movement told me everything.

This was not the first time.

It was only the first time I had seen it.

I reached for my phone.

Gloria’s face changed.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling an ambulance.”

“She doesn’t need—”

May you like

“And after that,” I said, looking straight at her, “I’m calling the police.”

For the first time in my life, Gloria looked afraid.
