Chapter 7: The House Becomes Ours

Gloria lost everything.

Her place in the family.

Her access to my parents’ estate.

Her freedom.

But the real ending did not happen in court.

It happened two weeks later.

At 4:08 a.m., Lily woke me with one hand gripping my arm.

“Daniel,” she whispered. “It’s time.”

Our daughter was born just after sunrise.

Tiny.

Fierce.

Perfect.

Lily held her against her chest and cried quietly.

This time, not from fear.

From relief.

“What should we name her?” I asked.

Lily looked at me.

“Grace.”

I smiled.

“Grace.”

Months later, the laundry room was gone.

I had it torn out completely.

In its place, I built a small nursery corner with warm lights, soft blankets, and a rocking chair beside the window.

One evening, Lily stood there holding Grace while sunlight covered them both.

She wore a yellow dress.

Bright.

Beautiful.

Impossible to ignore.

For the first time in a long time, she laughed.

And when I heard that sound fill our house again, I understood something.

Gloria had never been the heart of this family.

She had only been the shadow standing in front of it.

Now the shadow was gone.

And our home finally belonged to the people who knew how to love inside it.
