Chapter 1 — The Knock at the Door

The pounding on the front door echoed through the cabin before anyone moved.
My father, Michael, stared at the phone in my hand.
The red recording light was still flashing.
For the first time in years...
He looked afraid.
Another knock.
Louder this time.
"Open the door," a calm voice called from outside.
"No one move," my father barked.
But he was too late.
I unlocked the door myself.
Standing on the porch were Detective Olivia Grant, my attorney Daniel Foster, and a uniformed officer.
Daniel's eyes immediately found the bruises already forming around my neck.
His expression hardened.
"I told you to call if they touched you."
"I didn't have to," I answered quietly.
"My phone did."
The detective watched the recording.
No one in the room spoke.
Michael's hand around my throat.
Linda calling my surgery "wasted money."
Ethan demanding every dollar.
Then...
The sentence that froze everyone.
"Your brother needs that money more than you need your life."
Silence filled the cabin.
Detective Grant slowly looked up.
"Mr. Carter..."
"You're under arrest for felony assault."
Michael lunged toward the phone.
The officer slammed him against the wall before he could reach it.
