Chapter 4 — My Mother's Choice

Linda asked to see me before she testified.

She looked older than I remembered.

"I never wanted this."

I quietly asked,

"When he grabbed my throat..."

"Why didn't you stop him?"

She couldn't answer.

Instead she cried.

"I was scared."

"So was I."

"For twenty-seven years."

She reached for my hand.

I stepped back.

"I needed a mother."

"You chose to be a witness."

When Linda entered the courtroom...

Everyone expected her to defend her husband.

Instead she raised her right hand...

Looked directly at the jury...

And told them the truth.

Every lie.

Every threat.

May you like

Every dollar they had stolen from me since I turned eighteen.

Michael never looked at her again.
