CHAPTER 10: THE FIRE THEY BURIED
Eight years earlier, Whitmore Mill had burned to the ground.
The official report claimed the abandoned building caught fire because of damaged electrical wiring.
Three people died.
Julian Whitmore, Claire’s older brother.
Thomas Reed, Noah’s father.
And an unidentified woman whose body was never recovered.
Ethan had been a rookie firefighter that night.
His father, William Carter, had been chief.
Station 17 responded first.
Mara found the original report inside the city archive.
Half the pages had been removed.
The final timeline claimed rescue crews entered the building at 9:14 p.m.
A handwritten note in the margin told a different story.
ENTRY DELAYED BY ORDER OF CHIEF CARTER.
“Delayed how long?” Amelia asked.
“Seven minutes.”
The number made her stomach tighten.
Seven minutes at the fire.
Seven hours in the elevator.
Mara continued reading.
“Two firefighters argued against the order.”
“Who?”
“Thomas Reed and Ethan.”
Amelia looked toward Noah.
“Your father tried to enter?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He went inside alone.”
“And Ethan?”
Noah stared at the floor.
“He followed him.”
Mara turned the page.
“The report says Ethan was injured before reaching the victims.”
“That’s a lie,” Noah said.
“How do you know?”
“My father called my mother from inside the building.”
Noah removed an old phone from his pocket.
“My mother saved the voicemail.”
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a man’s strained voice became audible.
“Ethan found the woman. She’s alive. The chief is ordering him to leave her.”
A loud crash followed.
The voice returned.
“If I don’t make it out, tell Noah I kept my promise.”
The recording ended.
Amelia looked at Ethan’s name in the report.
“Who was the woman?”
Mara turned to the list of missing witnesses.
One name had been typed, then crossed out in black ink.
Evelyn Bennett.
Amelia stopped breathing.
“That’s my mother.”
Mara looked at her.
Amelia’s voice trembled.
“She disappeared eight years ago.”
The family had always believed Evelyn abandoned them.
Now Amelia faced a more frightening possibility.
Her mother had been inside Whitmore Mill.
