CHAPTER 19: THE MAN WHO NEVER LEFT
Police located William Carter in an abandoned retirement home outside the city.
Ethan insisted on joining the raid.
They found a bed, fresh food, medical supplies, and photographs of Amelia’s family.
But William was gone.
A television played security footage from the hotel gala.
The video showed Amelia entering the elevator.
Claire followed.
Thirty seconds later, the doors closed.
William’s recorded voice came through a speaker.
“Ethan always believed his greatest weakness was fear.”
Ethan stood frozen.
The voice continued.
“But fear was never his weakness. Love was.”
The television changed to another video.
Amelia lay unconscious after surgery.
Someone had recorded her through the hospital window.
Ethan moved toward the screen.
“What do you want?”
William’s voice answered as if the recording had anticipated the question.
“I want you to remember the first rule I taught you.”
Ethan whispered it automatically.
“Save the person who matters most.”
A final image appeared.
Claire sitting in the elevator control room before the gala.
Captain Morales stood behind her.
William sat beside the control panel.
The footage had no sound.
Claire appeared angry.
Morales placed something on the table.
A photograph of Theo’s ultrasound.
William pointed toward the elevator controls.
Then Claire shook her head.
“She didn’t agree,” Amelia said.
Ethan looked closer.
Claire had known about the plan.
But the footage suggested she did not create it.
The recording ended with William’s voice.
“One woman entered that elevator believing she was bait.”
A pause followed.
“The other entered believing she was the target.”
The screen went black.
Detective Grant turned toward Amelia.
“Which one were you?”
A sound came from the second floor.
Ethan ran upstairs.
They found an open window and a bloodstain.
