CHAPTER 28: THE MAN WITH JULIAN’S FACE

Claire contacted Amelia from a motel outside the city.

She refused police protection.

Mara traced the call anyway.

By the time officers arrived, the room was empty.

Claire had left a video recording.

She appeared exhausted, with a bruise across her forehead.

“The man calling himself Gabriel Morales is not my brother.”

She held up a childhood photograph of Julian.

“My brother had a scar beneath his left ear. Morales does not.”

Claire explained that William had shown her medical records proving Julian survived the fire.

She never saw him in person until the hotel basement video.

“When he used Julian’s name, I wanted to believe him.”

Her voice broke.

“But he made a mistake.”

The real Julian was left-handed.

Morales used his right hand to hold the weapon behind Noah.

Claire continued.

“Morales worked for my father before the mill fire. His real identity is buried inside the Whitmore research program.”

She held up a file.

The name had been removed.

Only a number remained.

SUBJECT TWO.

Ethan had been labeled the first successful subject.

The unknown man was Subject Two.

Noah had believed he was the second child.

He was not.

Someone else came before him.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“William does not want Theo because he is his grandson. He wants Theo because the child carries markers from Subject One and Evelyn Bennett’s bloodline.”

Amelia leaned closer.

“Why my mother?”

On the recording, Claire seemed to answer her.

“Because Evelyn was never only an investigator.”

Claire opened another document.

“She helped create the program.”

The video suddenly shook.

Claire looked toward the motel door.

Someone was outside.

She whispered one final sentence.

“Amelia, your mother planned your meeting with Ethan.”

The door burst open.

The recording ended.

Detective Grant searched the room.

She found Claire’s blood on the carpet.

But there was no body.

No sign of forced removal.

And no explanation for the two teacups still warm on the table.

Claire had not been alone before the door opened.

She had been waiting for someone she trusted.
