Chapter 3 - TEN SIGNATURES

Maya walked out of Naomi's office with the forged statement in one hand and rage tightening every muscle in her body.
Elena was sitting on the floor near the reception desk, helping Lily color a picture of a purple horse.
She looked up and smiled.
The smile vanished when she saw Maya's face.
"What happened?"
Maya handed her the affidavit.
Elena read the first page quickly.
Then she reached the signature page.
Her expression went blank.
"What is this?"
"You tell me."
Elena stared at the name written in blue ink.
"I didn't sign this."
Naomi stepped into the hallway behind Maya.
"Can you prove that?"
Elena looked offended.
"I was with Maya almost the entire night."
"That proves where you were."
Naomi pointed to the signature.
"I need something that proves this isn't yours."
Elena took out her wallet.
Her driver's license showed a completely different signature.
Naomi's eyebrows rose.
"That's helpful."
Elena looked from Naomi to Maya.
"Who would forge my name?"
Maya thought of Richard.
Then Olivia.
Then the nine guests who had apparently been willing to say she destroyed her own daughter's cake.
"Someone who needs a judge to believe I have nowhere safe to stay."
Naomi took the license and affidavit back into her office to make copies.
Elena followed Maya to the elevator.
"You don't actually think I would do this, right?"
Maya pressed the button.
"No."
"You looked at me like you did for half a second."
Maya turned toward her.
"For half a second, I looked at the paper and realized Richard had found a way to put your name under a lie."
Elena's anger softened.
"Okay."
"I hate that he can do that."
"Then we make him regret it."
The elevator opened.
Naomi called after them.
"Don't leave yet."
They turned.
Naomi held her phone against her chest.
"The judge scheduled an emergency conference for eleven."
Maya checked the clock.
They had less than two hours.
"Is Lily coming?"
"No."
Naomi looked at Elena.
"Can she stay with you?"
Elena nodded.
Maya crouched in front of Lily.
"Aunt Elena is going to take you for pancakes."
Lily brightened.
"With sprinkles?"
"An irresponsible number of sprinkles," Elena promised.
Maya kissed Lily's forehead.
As she stood, Lily grabbed the silver chain near Maya's collar.
The ring slipped outside her blouse.
"Your flower," Lily said.
Maya tucked it back in.
"My flower."
Lily whispered as though sharing a secret.
"Grandma doesn't like it."
Maya froze.
"What did you say?"
Lily was already looking at the purple horse again.
"Grandma doesn't like your flower."
Elena looked up.
Maya knelt again.
"Why do you think that?"
Lily shrugged.
"She tried to take it."
Maya's breath caught.
"When?"
"At Christmas."
"This last Christmas?"
Lily nodded.
"You were sleeping on the couch."
Maya remembered that night.
She had worked a double shift and fallen asleep after dinner while Richard and Olivia stayed in the kitchen drinking wine.
"What did Grandma do?"
Lily held up two fingers and made a pinching motion.
"She pulled the string."
Maya touched the chain.
"Did it break?"
"No."
"What happened?"
"I yelled."
Lily smiled proudly.
"I said, 'That's Mommy's.'"
Maya felt a cold line move down her spine.
Olivia had known about the ring long before the birthday party.
She had not merely recognized it yesterday.
She had tried to steal it months ago.
Naomi was already taking notes.
"Do not question Lily any further about that incident without me or a child specialist present."
Maya nodded.
"Why?"
"Because if this becomes relevant, we want her memory protected from claims that you coached her."
Maya stood slowly.
The case was becoming larger by the hour.
At 10:43 a.m., Richard arrived at the courthouse wearing the navy suit Maya had bought him for their fifth anniversary.
He brought Olivia, Vanessa, and a lawyer named Garrett Sloane.
Garrett was known for celebrity divorces and custody battles that ended up in newspapers.
Richard could not afford Garrett.
That was Maya's first thought.
Her second was worse.
Someone else was paying him.
Richard saw her beside Naomi and smiled as though they were meeting for brunch.
"Maya."
She did not answer.
He lowered his voice.
"We can stop this right now."
Naomi stepped between them.
"All communication goes through counsel."
Richard looked amused.
"So this is who you are now?"
Maya met his eyes.
"No."
She thought of Lily asking whether her next birthday cake would be safe.
"This is who I should have been sooner."
His smile disappeared.
Vanessa stood several feet behind him in a cream coat and dark glasses.
She avoided Maya's eyes.
Olivia did not.
Olivia looked directly at Maya's throat.
The necklace was hidden.
Maya saw the disappointment flicker across her face.
That confirmed Lily's memory more than any confession could have.
The conference took place in a small courtroom with no jury and no spectators.
Judge Marjorie Keene entered at eleven sharp.
Garrett spoke first.
He described Richard as a frightened father.
He described Maya as financially unstable.
He called the birthday incident "a regrettable family misunderstanding."
Naomi's pen stopped moving.
The judge looked over her glasses.
"A misunderstanding involving someone's face being pushed into a cake?"
Garrett smiled politely.
"The video lacks context, Your Honor."
"Then give me context."
Garrett said Maya had been drinking.
He said she had accused Richard of infidelity in front of guests.
He said she knocked over decorations.
He said Richard reached for her during an argument and she fell forward.
Maya felt her stomach turn.
It was almost impressive.
A room full of people had watched one thing happen.
By morning, Richard had manufactured a different event with legal vocabulary.
Then Garrett submitted the witness statements.
Naomi stood.
"One of those statements contains a forged signature."
The room changed instantly.
Garrett's confidence cracked for the first time.
"That's a serious accusation."
"Yes."
Naomi handed the judge copies of Elena's identification and a sworn statement executed that morning.
"Which is why we are making it seriously."
Judge Keene compared the signatures.
She looked at Garrett.
"Did your office witness these affidavits?"
"No, Your Honor."
"Who delivered them?"
Garrett glanced at Richard.
Richard glanced at Olivia.
Maya saw it.
So did the judge.
"Mr. Vance?"
Richard cleared his throat.
"My mother collected them."
Olivia's face hardened.
Judge Keene turned to her.
"Mrs. Vance, did you witness Ms. Mercer's signature?"
Olivia did not flinch.
"I received the pages from another guest."
"Which guest?"
"I don't remember."
Naomi made a small note.
The judge did not look impressed.
Then Naomi played the birthday video.
Not Vanessa's edited post.
Maya had downloaded a longer version from another guest's public account at four in the morning.
The video began twenty seconds before Richard grabbed Maya.
It captured his voice clearly.
"You made me look stupid in front of Vanessa."
Maya could be heard saying, "I'm not doing this in front of Lily."
Richard replied, "Then smile."
Maya said, "Take your hand off me."
Then came the cake.
Judge Keene watched without expression.
When the clip ended, she looked at Richard.
"You characterized that as a fall?"
Richard's face flushed.
Garrett stood.
"My client was under significant emotional stress."
The judge's voice became colder.
"Then your client should be grateful I am evaluating custody rather than his ability to manage emotional stress."
Maya almost exhaled.
Almost.
Then Garrett produced something else.
A police report.
Richard had reported Maya for taking the family vehicle without permission three months earlier.
Maya stared at it.
"That never happened."
Naomi touched her arm.
The report said Richard declined charges because Maya was his wife.
It painted him as forgiving.
It painted her as reckless.
There was more.
Two bank overdraft notices.
A statement from a pediatric nurse claiming Maya had missed Lily's appointment six months earlier.
A photograph of wine bottles in the recycling bin.
Every ordinary imperfection of their life had been rearranged to make Maya look unstable.
Then Naomi found the fracture.
The police report had been filed three months ago.
But the document number belonged to a report created at 6:12 that morning.
Naomi pointed it out.
The judge looked at Garrett.
Garrett looked genuinely surprised.
Richard looked at Olivia again.
Olivia's jaw tightened.
Judge Keene closed the file.
"Emergency custody is denied."
Maya's knees nearly weakened.
"Temporary physical custody remains with the mother pending a full hearing."
Richard turned toward Garrett.
"What?"
The judge continued.
"Mr. Vance will have supervised parenting time until this court is satisfied that the circumstances surrounding the birthday incident are understood."
Richard stood too quickly.
"She's taking my daughter from me."
Judge Keene looked directly at him.
"Sit down."
He did.
"And Mr. Vance?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"If any evidence submitted to this court is found to have been fabricated, the consequences will extend well beyond custody."
Olivia's face went pale.
Outside the courtroom, Richard caught Maya before Naomi could move between them.
He did not touch her.
He did something more familiar.
He smiled.
"You think you won?"
Maya looked at him.
"I think Lily is coming home with me."
"To Elena's spare room."
"Yes."
"You have no money."
"We'll manage."
"You have no job this week."
"I'll find one."
Richard leaned closer.
"Your debit card isn't going to work."
Maya's stomach dropped.
He saw it.
His smile widened.
"Joint account."
"Half that money is mine."
"Prove it."
Naomi appeared beside Maya.
"Thank you for admitting you intentionally restricted marital funds after your wife left."
Richard's face changed.
Naomi held up her phone.
"Would you like to repeat that more clearly?"
He walked away.
Maya watched him go.
She hated that part of her still shook afterward.
Naomi noticed.
"Fear and weakness are not the same thing."
Maya did not answer.
Her phone rang.
Julian.
She stepped aside.
"What did you find?"
"More than I expected."
His voice was tight.
"The photograph from your storage bin was taken at Hawthorne House in 1999."
Maya leaned against the wall.
"Two years after Serena disappeared."
"Yes."
"So Teresa was there."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"That is what I am trying to understand."
"Anything else?"
Julian paused.
"Evelyn Hawthorne wants to meet you."
Maya closed her eyes.
"Today?"
"Now."
"Does she know who I am?"
"No."
"Then why does she want to meet me?"
Julian's answer made Maya open her eyes.
"Because I sent her a photograph of your ring."
May you like
He lowered his voice.
"And she recognized a scratch on the inside of the band that no newspaper photograph has ever shown."
