Chapter 5 - THE LEAK

Maya showed Naomi the photograph on Richard's phone before she showed Julian.

Naomi did not swear often.

This time she did.

"Who had access to that intake form?"

"The laboratory."

"Anyone else?"

Maya looked at Julian.

"Us."

Julian's face hardened.

"My office never received a copy."

Naomi took Maya's phone.

"I did."

"Your staff?"

"Two people."

"Hawthorne House?"

"Evelyn's attorney received chain-of-custody confirmation."

Julian reached for his own phone.

"I'll find out."

Maya stopped him.

"No."

He looked at her.

"No more quiet calls between wealthy people who already know each other."

Maya pointed at Richard's message.

"Someone gave my husband private medical testing information within hours."

"Genetic testing," Naomi corrected.

"Which is even worse."

"Agreed."

Maya looked at Julian.

"I want a written list of everyone who knew about the tests."

Julian nodded once.

"You'll have it."

"And I want Richard's attorney notified that he is not to contact the lab."

Naomi was already typing.

"Done."

Maya's phone vibrated again.

This time the message was not from Richard.

It was a link from Elena.

The headline had gone live six minutes earlier.

WAITRESS IN VIRAL BIRTHDAY VIDEO CLAIMS SHE MAY BE MISSING HAWTHORNE HEIRESS.

Maya stared at the words.

Her mouth went dry.

"I never claimed anything."

Julian opened the article on his phone.

The story cited "a source close to the Vance family."

It said Maya had become obsessed with proving she belonged to the Hawthornes after her marriage collapsed.

It said she had approached wealthy strangers for money.

It said she was using the viral birthday video to generate sympathy.

Then came the line that made Naomi's eyes narrow.

According to the source, Maya had undergone a secret DNA test with Evelyn Hawthorne that morning.

The article had been posted by a gossip site at 6:03 p.m.

Richard's message arrived at 6:01.

"He knew before publication," Naomi said.

"Or he supplied it," Maya replied.

Julian looked furious.

"This is Conrad's style."

Maya turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

"He doesn't deny a threat."

Julian closed the article.

"He makes the threat look ridiculous before it can become credible."

Maya thought of the birthday party.

Richard had done the same thing for years.

If Maya said he insulted her, he told people she could not take a joke.

If she said he controlled the money, he said she was irresponsible.

If she said Vanessa made her uncomfortable, he said Maya was jealous.

Now someone was doing the same thing on a much larger scale.

"Then we don't answer," Maya said.

Julian looked surprised.

"No statement?"

"Not tonight."

"The story will spread."

"Let it."

Naomi watched Maya carefully.

"Why?"

Maya looked at the photograph of Teresa on her phone.

"Because if I deny everything, they say I'm hiding."

"And if you confirm it?" Julian asked.

"They say I'm chasing money."

She put the phone away.

"So I say nothing until the test says something."

Julian nodded slowly.

"Good."

Maya almost laughed.

"I wasn't asking."

"I know."

At 7:15, Vanessa went live on social media.

Elena watched from the kitchen while Maya helped Lily with macaroni and cheese.

Vanessa sat in a softly lit apartment wearing a gray sweater and no visible jewelry.

She looked carefully exhausted.

"I didn't want to say anything," Vanessa began.

Elena snorted.

"That is always how people begin when they desperately want to say something."

Maya kept stirring Lily's bowl.

Vanessa told viewers she had been unfairly blamed for a marriage already in crisis.

She admitted Richard and Maya had argued at the party.

She did not admit sleeping with Richard.

She claimed Maya had been talking about "secret inheritances" for months.

Maya set the spoon down.

That was a new lie.

Then Vanessa said something more dangerous.

"Richard told me Maya believed her mother had hidden money from her."

Maya looked at Elena.

"I never told Richard that."

"Did you ever think it?"

"No."

Vanessa continued.

"I genuinely hope Maya gets whatever help she needs."

Elena reached for the phone.

Maya stopped her.

"Leave it."

"She's making you sound unstable."

"That's the point."

Vanessa finished with tears in her eyes.

Maya almost admired the performance.

Thirty seconds after the live video ended, Richard posted a photograph of himself holding Lily as a newborn.

His caption read: A FATHER WILL DO ANYTHING TO PROTECT HIS CHILD.

Maya turned off the screen.

Lily pushed her bowl away.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Why is Daddy on Aunt Elena's phone?"

Maya forced a smile.

"Because grown-ups are being noisy."

Lily considered that.

"Can they be quiet?"

"I wish."

Lily leaned closer.

"Grandma said Daddy would be rich when your flower wakes up."

Maya stopped moving.

Elena slowly lowered her fork.

"What did Grandma say?"

Lily repeated it exactly.

"Daddy will be rich when Mommy's flower wakes up."

Maya's pulse hammered.

"When did she say that?"

Lily frowned in concentration.

"At Christmas."

The same night Olivia tried to take the ring.

Naomi had warned Maya not to question Lily further without a specialist.

Maya obeyed.

She smiled and redirected her daughter toward dessert.

But inside, one fact settled into place.

Olivia had not merely suspected Maya's identity.

She had expected the identity to become valuable.

The next morning, Naomi arranged for a child-interview specialist to speak with Lily in a playroom while Maya watched from behind one-way glass.

The specialist never mentioned money, rings, Richard, or Olivia first.

She let Lily talk about birthdays, Christmas, and family.

Lily eventually brought up the necklace on her own.

"Grandma wanted Mommy's flower."

"Why?"

"She said it was asleep."

"What happens when it wakes up?"

Lily stacked two wooden blocks.

"Daddy gets a big house."

"Did Daddy say that?"

Lily shook her head.

"Grandma."

"Anything else?"

Lily placed a third block on top.

"Grandma said Mommy doesn't need to know until papers are ready."

Behind the glass, Maya felt sick.

Naomi wrote one sentence on her pad and slid it toward Maya.

THIS PREDATES THE BIRTHDAY.

Maya nodded.

When the interview ended, Lily ran into her arms.

Maya held her too tightly for a moment.

"Mommy, can we get a donut?"

"Two."

"Three?"

Maya almost cried.

"Today, three."

Before the call came, Maya spent an hour dealing with a smaller humiliation that somehow felt more familiar than billionaire trusts.

The restaurant manager asked her to come through the back entrance to collect her final paycheck.

Maya almost refused.

Then she decided she would not let Vanessa's family turn the place where she had worked for five years into another room she was afraid to enter.

Elena drove her.

Naomi insisted Thomas wait outside in case reporters appeared.

Maya hated needing precautions to pick up wages she had already earned.

Inside, the lunch rush was beginning.

The smell of coffee and grilled onions hit her with such force that she nearly cried.

This was where Lily had colored menus in a corner booth when childcare fell through.

This was where Maya had learned which customers tipped twenty percent and which ones snapped their fingers.

This was where she had covered shifts for people who never knew her mother had once been a Hawthorne.

Her manager, Luis, met her near the office.

"I'm sorry," he said again.

Maya took the envelope from him.

"Did corporate tell you to fire me?"

"Suspend."

"With no schedule and no date to return."

Luis looked ashamed.

"Yes."

"Because of the video?"

"Because Vanessa's cousin called the district office and said you were creating reputational risk."

Maya almost laughed.

"I was the one with cake in my face."

"I know."

"Did anyone ask me what happened?"

"No."

That answer hurt in a way she had not expected.

People kept making decisions about Maya because listening to Maya was apparently the least convenient option.

Then a coffee mug hit the counter behind them.

Maya turned.

Tasha, another server, stood with her arms folded.

"You know what is reputational risk?"

Luis sighed.

"Tasha."

"Forty people watching a man shove his wife into a child's cake."

Two cooks looked out from the kitchen.

Tasha walked over and hugged Maya before Maya could object.

"Half the staff saw the video."

Maya swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?"

Maya did not have an answer.

Tasha handed her a folded card.

Inside were short notes from twelve coworkers.

One read, YOU COVERED CHRISTMAS EVE SO I COULD SEE MY KIDS.

Another read, YOU ARE NOT WHAT THAT VIDEO SAYS ABOUT YOU.

At the bottom, someone had taped two hundred and forty dollars in cash.

Maya immediately shook her head.

"No."

Tasha pushed the card back toward her.

"Yes."

"I can't take this."

"Then call it tips we should have given you for putting up with us."

Maya laughed through sudden tears.

She had spent the last two days hearing about billions.

Two hundred and forty dollars from people who worked for hourly wages felt more valuable than any hypothetical fortune.

She put the money in her bag.

"I'm paying everyone back."

Tasha rolled her eyes.

"Become a billionaire first."

Maya looked at her.

"That seems to be under review."

For the first time, the room laughed with her instead of at her.

The moment lasted less than a minute.

But Maya carried it with her when she returned to Naomi's office.

It reminded her that identity was not only something hidden in DNA.

It also lived in the people who had watched how she behaved when there was nothing to inherit.

At noon, the first DNA laboratory called Naomi.

The results were ready early.

Maya sat in Naomi's office with Julian and Evelyn on a speakerphone.

No one spoke while Naomi opened the secure report.

She read the first line.

Then she stopped.

Maya's heartbeat filled her ears.

"What does it say?"

Naomi looked at her.

"The probability of a biological grandparent relationship between Evelyn Hawthorne and Maya Vance is greater than 99.99 percent."

The room became completely silent.

Maya did not feel richer.

She did not feel powerful.

She felt seventeen years old again, sitting beside Teresa's hospital bed, being handed a ring she did not understand.

Evelyn made a sound through the phone that might have been a sob.

Maya closed her eyes.

"So Teresa was Serena."

Julian answered quietly.

"Yes."

Maya opened her eyes.

"We still wait for the second lab."

Naomi nodded.

"Absolutely."

Julian's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Thomas."

He answered.

"What happened?"

He listened.

Then he stood.

"When?"

Maya watched the color leave his face.

"Call the police."

He ended the call.

"What?" Maya asked.

Julian looked at her.

"The second laboratory had a break-in last night."

Naomi went still.

"Was anything taken?"

"No."

"Then why are you looking like that?"

May you like

Julian held Maya's gaze.

"Because someone opened the secured refrigerator containing your sample."
