Chapter 8 - OLIVIA'S PRICE

Maya agreed to meet Olivia only under Naomi's conditions.
The meeting took place in a conference room at Naomi's law office.
Two cameras recorded continuously.
Richard was not allowed inside.
Neither was Julian.
Olivia arrived at ten in the morning wearing a camel coat and pearl earrings.
She looked exactly as she had at Lily's birthday party.
Controlled.
Polished.
Certain the room belonged to her.
That certainty lasted until Maya placed copies of the Hawthorne payment records on the table.
Olivia stopped removing her gloves.
"Where did you get those?"
Naomi sat beside Maya.
"You are here voluntarily, Mrs. Vance."
Olivia ignored her.
She looked at Maya.
"You have no idea what those payments were for."
"Then tell me."
Olivia sat.
"I saved your life."
Maya felt anger rise immediately.
"My mother already said that."
Olivia's face changed.
"You heard the tape."
"I heard enough."
"Then you heard her accuse me."
"She said you gave Conrad an address."
"I gave him an empty apartment."
"Why give him anything?"
Olivia's jaw tightened.
"Because he knew about my younger brother."
Maya waited.
"What about him?"
"He had been arrested."
"For what?"
"It doesn't matter."
"It mattered enough for you to sell my mother."
Olivia's eyes flashed.
"I did not sell her."
Maya pushed the payment records across the table.
"One point eight million dollars says otherwise."
Olivia's voice dropped.
"Conrad paid for silence after the fact."
"Silence about what?"
Olivia looked toward the camera.
Naomi spoke calmly.
"If you came here to negotiate secrecy, you came to the wrong office."
Olivia looked back at Maya.
"The ferry was sabotaged."
"We know."
"You don't know why."
"Money."
"Control."
Olivia leaned forward.
"Serena had discovered Conrad was moving company assets into entities he controlled."
"We know that too."
"She also discovered someone else was helping him."
Maya narrowed her eyes.
"Who?"
Olivia hesitated.
"Evelyn's husband."
The room went still.
Maya stared at her.
"My grandfather?"
"Arthur Hawthorne."
Olivia nodded.
"He was dying."
"He died before the ferry."
"Six weeks before."
"So how was he helping Conrad after he died?"
Olivia shook her head.
"He wasn't."
"Then what are you saying?"
"Arthur created the structure Conrad later abused."
Maya looked at Naomi.
Olivia continued.
"The Orchid Trust wasn't designed only to give Serena control."
"What else did it do?"
"It prevented anyone outside Serena's direct bloodline from permanently owning the voting shares."
Maya thought of Richard.
"Including a spouse."
"Especially a spouse."
Something almost like satisfaction touched Olivia's face.
"Your husband gets nothing from the trust in a divorce."
Maya stared at her.
"You knew that?"
"I learned it years ago."
"Then why tell Lily her father would be rich?"
For the first time, Olivia looked unsettled.
"Children misunderstand things."
"She remembered your exact words."
"She's four."
"And apparently better at telling the truth than the adults in your family."
Olivia's mouth tightened.
Naomi did not hide her approval.
Maya leaned forward.
"Did you encourage Richard to marry me because you thought I was Mayabelle Hawthorne?"
Olivia looked away.
"Answer."
"I encouraged him because you were good for him."
Maya laughed.
"That isn't what I asked."
Olivia finally met her eyes.
"I recognized the ring the first Christmas."
"You knew before that?"
"I suspected from your face."
"You had met me twice."
"You looked like Serena."
"So you researched me."
Olivia said nothing.
"Did you?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"Teresa Hayes had almost no history before 1998."
Maya's skin prickled.
"You knew."
"I knew enough."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Olivia's face hardened.
"Because I didn't know whether Serena had stayed hidden for a reason."
"You tried to steal the ring while I was asleep."
Olivia looked stunned.
"Lily saw you."
That landed.
Olivia slowly sat back.
"I wanted to verify the engraving."
"By taking it off my neck?"
"I was going to put it back."
"How generous."
Maya's voice became colder.
"Did Richard know?"
"Not until recently."
"How recently?"
Olivia hesitated.
"Six months."
Maya felt sick.
Six months.
The same period when Richard's behavior had become stranger.
He had started asking Maya to sign new insurance documents.
He had suggested putting all household accounts under his management.
He had become obsessed with whether Teresa left a will.
Maya had assumed money stress was making him controlling.
Now she wondered whether he had been searching for an inheritance he thought she did not understand.
"What did you tell him?"
"Only that your mother may have come from money."
"How much money?"
Olivia's silence was answer enough.
"You told him about Hawthorne."
"Eventually."
Maya closed her eyes.
Richard had spent months telling her she was useless while privately wondering whether she was worth billions.
The cruelty became somehow worse.
He had not humiliated a poor wife because he thought she had no power.
He had humiliated a woman he suspected might become powerful because he believed marriage gave him a claim on her anyway.
"What did Richard do after you told him?"
Olivia looked uncomfortable.
"He spoke to a lawyer."
Naomi's pen stopped.
"Which lawyer?"
"I don't know."
"Garrett Sloane?"
Olivia said nothing.
Naomi wrote the name down.
Maya leaned closer.
"You said Serena was wrong about the Providence address."
Olivia looked at her.
"She was."
"Then who gave it to Conrad?"
Olivia's face changed.
"Julian's father."
Maya went completely still.
"What?"
"Peter Sterling."
"Julian said his father died after Serena called him."
"He did."
"Then how could he give Conrad an address three months later?"
Olivia reached into her handbag.
Naomi immediately raised a hand.
"Slowly."
Olivia removed an old photocopy and placed it on the table.
It was a memo dated January 1998.
Three months after the ferry disaster.
The signature at the bottom read PETER STERLING.
Maya stared at it.
The memo listed an address in Providence.
Serena's address.
"Where did you get this?"
"Conrad showed it to me when Serena accused me."
"Is it real?"
"I don't know."
Maya's mind raced.
If Peter Sterling betrayed Serena, then Julian's entire story changed.
If the memo was forged, someone had been laying false trails for decades.
Naomi took a photograph.
"We will have it authenticated."
Olivia put her gloves back on.
"You wanted the truth."
Maya looked at her.
"No."
"What?"
"I wanted your truth."
Maya tapped the payment records.
"And your truth is that you took money to stay quiet while my mother ran for her life."
Olivia's eyes hardened.
"You think you're morally superior because you were poor?"
Maya stared at her.
Olivia continued.
"You have no idea what people do when they are desperate."
"I know exactly what I did when I was desperate."
Maya's voice stayed calm.
"I worked."
Olivia flinched.
"I borrowed."
Maya continued.
"I went without."
"You weren't threatened."
"I was married to your son."
The room went silent.
Olivia stood.
"Richard still loves Lily."
"Then he should start behaving like her father instead of my creditor."
Olivia looked toward the door.
"There is one more thing."
Maya waited.
"Conrad called a special Hawthorne board meeting for Friday."
Julian had not told her that.
"Why?"
"To declare the Orchid Trust dormant permanently."
Naomi stood.
"On what basis?"
"That Serena and Mayabelle are legally dead."
Maya stared at Olivia.
"He can't do that if the DNA proves who I am."
Olivia gave her a grim smile.
"He can try."
"Why Friday?"
Olivia opened the door.
"Because the trust has a notice clause."
"What notice clause?"
"Once a biological claimant appears, the trustee has thirty days to certify the claim."
"And if he doesn't?"
Olivia looked back.
"The voting rights transfer to the existing board for twenty years."
Naomi's face changed.
"Who is the trustee?"
Olivia answered with one name.
"Conrad Bell."
After she left, Maya called Julian.
He answered on the first ring.
"I was about to call you."
"Were you going to tell me about Friday?"
Silence.
Maya's anger rose.
"Julian."
"Yes."
"When?"
"When I confirmed what Conrad filed."
"Stop deciding when I can handle information about my own life."
"You're right."
"Again."
"Yes."
She almost hung up.
Then she remembered the memo.
"I have something with your father's signature on it."
Julian went quiet.
"What?"
"A document giving Conrad my mother's Providence address."
"That's impossible."
"That's what Olivia said you'd say."
Julian's voice changed.
"Send it to me."
"Naomi will."
"Maya, my father was dead by then."
"Then someone forged his signature."
"Yes."
"Unless the date is false."
Julian said nothing.
Maya felt the first real fracture in her trust toward him.
Before she could speak again, Naomi's assistant hurried into the room holding a printed email.
"The third lab called."
Maya turned.
"Already?"
"They expedited."
Naomi took the paper.
Her eyes moved across the page.
She looked at Maya.
"It's confirmed."
Maya's heartbeat stopped for one impossible moment.
"How confirmed?"
"Greater than 99.99 percent."
Naomi put the report on the table.
"You are Evelyn Hawthorne's biological granddaughter."
Maya looked at her own name on the page.
MAYA VANCE.
For the first time, it looked temporary.
Her phone began vibrating with notifications.
Dozens.
Then hundreds.
Elena called.
"Maya, don't open social media."
Maya already had.
A major financial network was reporting breaking news.
HAWTHORNE GLOBAL BOARD INFORMED MISSING HEIRESS MAY BE ALIVE.
Below it was an image of Maya covered in pink birthday frosting.
The split screen placed her humiliation beside Hawthorne Global's headquarters.
Then a second headline appeared.
HUSBAND OF POSSIBLE BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS SEEKS MARITAL CLAIM TO ANY RECOVERED ASSETS.
Maya stared at the words.
Richard had filed the claim twenty-three minutes after the laboratory transmitted the result.
He had moved before Maya even saw it.
And attached to his filing was a document she had never seen before.
A postnuptial agreement bearing Maya's signature.
It gave Richard Vance fifty percent of "all subsequently discovered family assets, inheritances, trusts, recoveries, or beneficial interests."
Maya looked at Naomi.
"I never signed that."
Naomi read the date.
Her expression darkened.
"According to this, you signed it three days after Lily was born."
Maya's hands went cold.
Three days after Lily was born, Maya had been in the hospital recovering from an emergency delivery.
Richard had brought her stacks of insurance and discharge forms.
He had stood beside the bed and pointed where she should sign.
Maya remembered being exhausted.
She remembered trusting him.
May you like
She remembered signing whatever he placed in front of her.
For the first time, she could not say with certainty that the signature was forged.
