CHAPTER 11 — THE BROTHER WHO KEPT THE LAST SECRET

Nathan rushed into the surgical room.
Claire lay strapped beneath the bright lights.
He reached her first.
“I’m here.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You came back.”
“I should never have left.”
He tore at the wrist restraints.
Gabriel pushed Evelyn into the room while June searched the cabinets for medication to stop the contractions.
Veronica stood near the far wall.
She held no weapon now.
The scalpel lay on the floor beside the severed intravenous line.
Dr. Cole slowly raised his hands.
Nathan looked at Veronica.
“You’re Margaret’s second daughter.”
“I’m the daughter she erased.”
“Where is Vanessa?”
Veronica smiled.
“Which one?”
Nathan stepped toward her.
“Do not play games with me.”
“You have lived with Vanessa your entire life and never once wondered how she could be in two places at the same time.”
“I know the difference now.”
“No, you don’t.”
Veronica touched the scar behind her ear.
“We switched places for the first time when we were sixteen.”
Nathan stopped.
“What?”
“Vanessa hated family dinners. I wanted to see the mansion. We discovered no one noticed.”
Claire watched Nathan’s face.
Veronica continued:
“Over the years, Margaret used us both. Sometimes Vanessa attended meetings under my instructions. Sometimes I attended events under her name. Even our mother stopped caring which daughter stood beside her, as long as the correct face appeared.”
“Where is she now?”
“Ask Margaret.”
Nathan turned toward Gabriel.
“The trust file.”
Gabriel remained silent.
“Give it to her,” Nathan said.
Veronica laughed.
“You think the file will save Claire?”
“It’s what you demanded.”
“I demanded it because Gabriel has been hiding more than inheritance records.”
Nathan looked at his brother.
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“What is she talking about?”
Gabriel looked at Evelyn.
His mother appeared confused by the bright room and shouting voices.
“I found the trust file six months ago,” Gabriel said.
“You told me Claire found you first.”
“She did.”
“But you already knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“You let Claire walk into this alone.”
“I warned her to stop investigating.”
“You could have come to me.”
“I spent thirty-eight years learning what happens to people who trust Whitmores.”
Nathan moved closer.
“And yet you brought us here.”
“Because I needed Evelyn.”
Claire felt another contraction.
She cried out.
June pressed a hand against her stomach.
“We need an actual hospital.”
“No hospitals controlled by the family,” Gabriel said.
June looked at him.
“Then she could lose the baby.”
The room fell silent.
Nathan returned to Claire’s side.
“We’re leaving.”
Gabriel blocked the doorway.
“Not until Cole signs a confession.”
Nathan stared at him.
“My wife is in premature labor.”
“And this may be the only chance to expose everything.”
Nathan shoved him aside.
Gabriel caught his arm.
“I lost my mother for almost four decades.”
“And I’m not losing my wife tonight.”
The brothers stood inches apart.
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“Henry chose the baby.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Her gaze was fixed on Gabriel.
“What did you say?” he asked.
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“Henry came to Blackwood. He said he would take you away.”
Gabriel knelt beside her.
“Why didn’t he?”
“He learned the truth.”
“What truth?”
Evelyn looked at Nathan.
“Margaret was already carrying a child.”
Nathan felt the room tilt.
Evelyn continued:
“Henry planned to leave her. Margaret told him that if he took Gabriel, she would reveal that Nathan was not his.”
Nathan stopped breathing.
Margaret had always insisted Nathan was Henry’s biological son.
The DNA test had shown Gabriel and Nathan were half brothers.
But it had never identified which parent they shared.
Nathan turned toward Gabriel.
“We share a mother?”
Gabriel shook his head.
“Impossible.”
Evelyn reached for his face.
“No. You shared a father.”
“Then what did Margaret mean?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with fear.
“She said Nathan belonged to someone else.”
Nathan looked at Cole.
The doctor lowered his gaze.
“You know,” Nathan said.
Cole backed toward the wall.
“Your mother controlled the records.”
“Who is my father?”
Cole said nothing.
Nathan seized his collar.
“Who?”
A gunshot cracked through the room.
The surgical light shattered.
Everyone dropped.
When Nathan looked up, Dr. Cole was gone.
The side door stood open.
On the floor where Cole had been standing lay a small silver key.
May you like
The key was engraved with two words:
HENRY’S VAULT.
