CHAPTER 12 — THE VAULT BENEATH THE CHAPEL

June stabilized Claire long enough to move her.
They used an old service ambulance parked behind Blackwood. Nathan drove while June remained beside Claire in the rear compartment.
Gabriel followed in another vehicle with Evelyn.
Veronica had disappeared during the chaos.
No one knew whether she had escaped alone or followed Dr. Cole.
Claire gripped Nathan’s hand through the opening behind the driver’s seat.
“Where are we going?”
“A hospital unaffiliated with my family.”
“No.”
“Claire—”
“Cole will alert them.”
June checked the fetal monitor.
“She’s right. Any hospital admission will create a digital record. Margaret’s attorneys will know within minutes.”
Nathan held up the silver key.
“Then we find what Henry hid first.”
Gabriel’s voice came through the phone speaker.
“The vault is at the family chapel.”
The Whitmore chapel stood on a remote hill twelve miles from Blackwood. Henry had built it after Nathan’s birth, supposedly as a private place for prayer and family ceremonies.
Nathan had not entered it since his father’s funeral.
They arrived before dawn.
The building appeared empty.
Nathan carried Claire inside while June brought the medical bag.
Beneath the altar, Gabriel found a keyhole hidden behind a brass panel.
The silver key fit.
A section of stone floor shifted aside, revealing a narrow staircase.
Nathan wanted Claire to remain upstairs.
She refused.
“They tried to bury this because of me. I’m seeing it.”
They descended together.
The vault contained no money.
It held records.
Boxes of medical files lined the walls. Photographs, recorded tapes, bank transfers, legal affidavits, and sealed envelopes filled the shelves.
Henry had documented everything.
Gabriel opened the first box.
Inside were copies of Evelyn’s medical records and photographs of her injuries.
Nathan found files showing payments from Margaret to Dr. Cole beginning thirty-eight years earlier.
Claire discovered a folder labeled VERONICA M. WHITMORE.
The documents described a second infant born to Margaret. Dr. Cole had falsified the death certificate and transferred the child to Blackwood under a fabricated diagnosis.
Nathan opened another envelope.
A handwritten letter from Henry fell out.
Nathan,
If you find this, then I failed to correct what I allowed.
Gabriel is my first son.
You are my son in every way that mattered to me, but the truth of your birth belongs to Margaret and Adrian Cole.
I intended to protect both of you.
Instead, my silence became the weapon they used against everyone.
Do not trust the public records.
Find the blood ledger.
Nathan read the letter twice.
Claire rested one hand on his shoulder.
“He loved you.”
“He lied to me.”
“He may have been trying to protect you.”
“That is what everyone in this family says before destroying someone.”
Gabriel found a black ledger inside a locked drawer.
Each page contained initials, blood types, birth dates, and payment amounts.
Nathan’s initials appeared beside a code.
N.W. — DONOR A.C.
Claire looked toward the staircase.
“Adrian Cole.”
Nathan’s face became numb.
Dr. Cole was his biological father.
The man who had imprisoned Claire.
The man who helped erase Gabriel.
The man who had spent decades attending Whitmore dinners as the trusted family physician.
Gabriel turned several pages.
“Vanessa and Veronica are listed too.”
“Cole?” Nathan asked.
Gabriel shook his head.
“The donor column is blank.”
June’s voice came from behind them.
“We need to move. Claire’s contractions are closer.”
Claire leaned against the shelf.
A sharp pain took her breath away.
Nathan lifted her into his arms.
As he turned toward the stairs, the chapel bells began ringing above them.
No one had touched them.
Then smoke drifted down the staircase.
“The chapel is on fire,” Gabriel said.
Nathan carried Claire toward the stairs, but flames appeared across the doorway.
Someone had locked them inside the vault.
A speaker hidden in the ceiling crackled.
Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“Henry always believed paper could defeat power.”
Nathan looked toward the speaker.
“Open the door!”
“You stole records that belong to this family.”
“You tried to kill Claire.”
“I tried to preserve your child’s future.”
“By taking the child from its mother?”
“Claire was going to expose the trust. Everything you inherited would have passed to Gabriel.”
Gabriel stepped beneath the speaker.
“It was never yours.”
Margaret ignored him.
“Nathan, there is another exit behind the east shelf.”
Nathan searched the shelves.
“Why are you helping us?”
“Because only one person may use it before the fire reaches the mechanism.”
Claire looked at Nathan.
Margaret continued:
“Choose carefully. Your wife, your brother, or the woman who claims to be his mother.”
May you like
The speaker went silent.
The fire spread down the stairs.
