CHAPTER 22 THE EMPTY GRAVES

The chapel had no windows.

Rows of wooden benches faced a stone altar.

Behind it stood twelve small white markers.

Each bore a number instead of a name.

Claire carried the unknown baby while Nathan searched for another entrance.

Evelyn approached the markers.

Her fingers touched Number Two.

“Gideon.”

He stepped from the shadows near the altar.

“That was the grave they gave you.”

“I came here every year.”

“I know.”

Evelyn turned.

“You watched me?”

“Cole made me watch.”

Gabriel entered and aimed his weapon at his brother.

“Move away from her.”

Gideon looked at him.

“The son she was allowed to keep.”

“I didn’t choose what happened.”

“No. You simply received the life they took from me.”

Claire stepped between the brothers.

“This is not about either of you.”

Gideon’s gaze dropped to the child in her arms.

“No. It is about what families do when they decide one child matters more than another.”

Margaret approached the altar.

“I brought no ledger.”

Gideon smiled.

“You brought it inside the lining of your coat.”

Nathan searched her.

His hand found a narrow leather book sewn beneath the fabric.

Margaret tried to pull away.

Nathan ripped the ledger free.

Veronica appeared on the upper balcony.

A white bundle rested in her arms.

Claire froze.

“My daughter.”

Veronica looked down at her.

“Bring the ledger to the altar.”

Nathan opened the book.

Pages of names, dates, transfers and deaths filled it.

“You want this?”

“Without it, none of you can prove anything.”

“And with it?”

“The Whitmore name disappears.”

Nathan held the ledger over a candle.

Veronica’s expression changed.

“Do not.”

“Bring me my child.”

Veronica descended slowly.

Claire watched the white blanket.

A tiny hand seemed to move beneath it.

Nathan extended the ledger.

Veronica placed the bundle on the altar.

Claire rushed forward and pulled back the blanket.

A plastic doll stared up at her.

A recording device beneath it played the sound of a newborn crying.

The chapel doors slammed shut.

Gideon swore and turned toward the balcony.

Veronica was already gone.

The twelve grave markers began moving.

Stone scraped against stone.

The floor opened beneath them.

One by one, small coffins rose from hidden chambers.

Evelyn gripped Gabriel’s arm.

Margaret backed toward the wall.

“These were supposed to remain sealed.”

Nathan opened the coffin beneath Number Two.

It was empty.

The next coffin contained only a child’s hospital bracelet.

The third held photographs.

The fourth contained a portable oxygen tank connected to a tube disappearing into the floor.

Claire heard something beneath the chapel.

Not a recording.

A real baby.

Crying.

She dropped to her knees beside the opening.

“She’s underneath us.”

Nathan and Gabriel pulled the stone panel aside.

A narrow passage appeared.

Before Claire could enter, Vanessa’s phone received a message.

It was a photograph.

Claire’s daughter lay inside a moving car.

A woman with Vanessa’s face sat beside her.

Claire looked at the real Vanessa standing in the chapel.

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

“Vera has her.”

A second message appeared.

THE MOTHER CHOSE THE LEDGER.

Claire turned toward Margaret.

But Margaret was gone.
